The 93 and older have leaf springs at all four corners where as the 94 and newer have coil springs on the front. (If the 92 is a manual it will be a Getrag 5sp where the 94 and newer will have the NVG4500. I think the automatic with OD was first used in 93 so the 91 will be non OD.

No not the "same". The 93 and older has a different fuel injection system, the 94-98.5 has another same basic engine. The 98.5 + yet another fuel system and 24 valve head.

Yes they all have Turbos of one sort or another. There was differences between the thre major changes, and the 98.5+ have several different turbos.

I drove a 93 up until this time last year and it had 360,000 miles on it when I sold it, and I never touched the engine.

Intercoolers started around '91.5. I think all the motors were 160 hp through '93. '94-'95 was 160 auto, 175/180 stick; '96-early '98 was 180 auto, 215 stick. '94 was regular cab only. '89-'93 was the Getrag (Getrash) 5 spd, '94+ was the NV4500, some '99s had 6 spds, then they disappeared for a bit, when they came back it was only with the HO motor (and the only trans available w/said motor). IMO the best would be the '98 12 valve quad cab, followed by the '96-'97s. The 215 motor has the most potential as far as modifications.

For Dodge Cummins tech, go to the discussion forums at www.tdr1.com. Its a pay to post site, but you can read as a non-member.

However...

The early (Getrag) equipped diesels had a NP205, the NV4500 ones a NP241. Only thing better about a 241 is the ratio; fixable in a 205 with a 203 doubler.

i had a '92 w/ the getrag, it was used on a farm and pulled heavy loads on a daily basis, like 10,000+ at least once a week, after 250,000 miles i sold it, and the guy who bought it has been drivin it around for the last 2 years and racked up about another 200,000 only pulling heavy loads and the only problem either of us had was the limited slip in the rear went out at about 210,000, other than that, no problems

I had to rebuild the tranny in my 93 at 300,000 miles but it was because it sustained some trauma.

Was driving down the highway one day, shifting from second to third when the pin in the differential backed out and wedged on the housing long enough to lock it up for a second before it sheared. This momentary lockdown knocked the synchronizers out for first and second gear. I got used to shifting it and drove it for another 20,000 miles or so before it hung up in second gear one day.

It is also hard to find anyone willing to rebuild this transmission, and a used one goes for around $1000-1500. Friend of mine rebuilt mine for $600

the dodge diesel is like a sore peter, you can't beat'em.
I have a 2001 2500 HO with a six speed racked 20,000 on it and only had to fix the filter housing for the fuel. The little pump handle to expel water from the fuel leaked.

A 91 may or may not have an intercooler, 94s do and I wouldn't buy a 91 without it. 91 has Bosch VE rotary pump as opposed to the P7100 inline Bosch pump on the 94s. The P7100 is about the best injection pump i can imagine. A big advantage is the the 7100 is tied into the engine's lube oil circuit where the VE relies on the diesel fuel alone to lubricate it. 91s have large, non wastegated Holset H1C turbos while the 94s have smaller wastegated H1C turbos. The smaller wastegated design allows boost to come on lower in the RPM band and enhance driveability. 94s were 12cm while 91s were 18 or 21cm, not sure. There are a number of other internal differences but these are the primary engine differences. Both engines can be uprated but you can go a lot higher with a 94 due to the pump's higher capacity.
