Dodge parts in a Toyota 4runner
Well i have the complete drive train w/360 from a rust out 78 4x4 dodge power wagon. I've been thinking of putting everything in a 85 Toyota 4runner i have at the house. I had planned on replacing the the blown 22re with the 360 and replace the tranny & transfer case from the toyota with the dodge 727 tranny & transfer case. I want to use the Dana 60's from the dodge put them under the 4runner using them full width. I have seen a mud runner up here that used a 440 i think. Just wanted to know if anyone has done this so i can find out what problems they ran into. Right now i'm having some suspenion built for the toyota and some other things. Thanks

The 360 in stock form is not a dog if you put in a good distributor and don't have to keep it emissions legal. Run it, I think you'll like it. Mopar engine swaps aren't the most common for non-mopar applications so you'll just have to dive in and figure it out. I'm thinking the worst part will be the distance between the firewall and radiator support is kinda tight. Get it on and post pics.

There is nothing wrong with the 360 as a base engine. True, there have been versions of the 360 that haven't been very impressive but I doubt anyone is going to pull a 360 out of a Cordoba and run it as is even if it does double the torque of any 22R. Swap in a mild 360 4BBL with a good RV cam and in decent condition and you have a very good, reliable and torquey powerplant. A 360 is every bit as good as a GM 350 and can be built to provide the same power output as it and other similarly sized engines. I don't know anyone who would judge an engine based on it's year model without knowing what mods have been done to it or if it's stock, or even what it came out of. None of the 360s are really very impressive in stock form, but they will whip the ass of any Toyota 22R no matter what version it is.

The 360 i have is a very strong engine. In the Power wagon it was in if you asked for it the engine always gave it to you and more. I figure the liter toyota will give me more power then i need. I figure if you can put a chevy 350 or a ford 5.1 in a toyota why not a mopar, and i have all the mopar parts i can use.

Back from the dead!!
Did ya ever do the swap? I have an 84 Ramcharger that is getting ready to go under the knife. Pulling engine, tranny, xfer case, axles in a few weeks.
I also have a 90 4runner that the body is good on, just a buttload of miles on it and front main seal leaking. My thoughts were that I would do the same thing as the OP. I have the donor truck (which will be getting a 440 transplant with 2.5t rockwells) and if I have the parts, I might as well use them. If you did wind up doing the swap, can you post some pics and things you had troubles with? It will mostly be a trail rig, so I have no problems in cutting the radiator core support up a little or tunneling the firewall a little more. Might occasionally drive it to my shop that is 7 miles away, but here in North Dakota, the laws are pretty lax and I live out in the middle of BFE. |

I just stuffed a 440 into the Ram Royal D50, but I ended up cutting the entire firewall out to push the engine back. Without doing that I had no room for a radiator. It did fit though, looked pretty stupid with the water pump pulley about 2" from the radiator support. It ended up about 6" back from there. You'll just have to drop it in there to see what you have to work with. When I told friends my plan they would ask, "will it fit?" and I would say, "I'll make it fit." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Well said! Even without any internal mods(cam) simply bolting on an aluminum intake, 600 Holley and a good set of headers will show a marked increase in power and torque. To get the most out of the 360, without breaking the bank, only requires a cam change and a little port matching. As far as changing dizzys, I've ran Unilights, but I've never had any complaints with the factory ones.
