I like to stick with the standard sized ATO fuses because they are super common and available anywhere.
Back when I was into car stereo I had a Maxi fuse and on a road trip I blew one and I couldn't find a replacement anywhere. I switched it out for a resettable circuit breaker when I got back home.

Your correct about 40 amps is 40 amps no matter what, but fuse have different blow rates. A slow blow fuse will take a surge better than a rapid blow fuse. I know this is true in commercial electrical and I think it is the same with auto fuse types.
