Also few specs on the galaxy in case others are in the dark like I was. I have an iPad 2 but wanted a dedicated tablet for my that I could use in my truck as a gps and when wheeling toss in a mount in the buggy.
Few specs and pros/cons -Dual core 2 processor running android 4 with 8 GB of memory and micro sd card slot to expand it up to 32 GB. A card slot was important to me so I could download pics if needed, have more memory space, or if possible download a map from someone or my lap top etc. So far seems as fast as my iPad 2 that runs the same processor. - 3.2 megapixel rear facing camera, the acer didn't have this. The camera is still a joke but it's a nice feature/option to have. Also a rear camera allows me to run a cool app I found if I want to record while driving in my work truck called Dailyroads. It also has a IR output, so if I you want to control your tv and go nuts with Samsung tvs you could enjoy this thing a lot on the couch. Personally I don't care about that but thought I'd at least reference it. -Typing on this compared to the 10 inch acer or iPad sucks, but I'm also one of those people hanging on to blackberrys for their keyboard so take that as you will. -Another negative to me at least is I am not used to a droid bassed OS so it has been a challenge as it seems less intuitive than apples products. On the plus side is I can change that where as with the apple products you are stuck. Downloaded navfree USA and so far I like it and I believe I'll be ordering a vehicle specific mount for my Sierra from http://www.proclipusa.com/ Last edited by supersize75k5; 07-23-2012 at 12:52 PM. |

Great idea! And a couple of questions/ ideas...
Seems like you could integrate a security/ ignition system with it as well ![]() Virtual engine gauge displays should be possible. Will the screen of the iPad (does Acer do this? ) try and "rotate" when you are bouncing around off-road? Can you defeat that feature?I have an anti-glare (glossy, clear) screen sticker thing for my i-phone, might help to put that on the screen, before installing the cover. Try this for the amp hook-up: http://www.kicker.com/pxi502 It includes the proper EQ circuit to sound nice (ask anyone who's used the mini-phono to RCA cheat), and it's easier to use when you need to mute it quickly as your rolling over

So far I have been using it in my daily driver and it's fun sadly my duramax only does a 18.2 quarter mile As for the acer, no idea I ditched it for the Samsung galaxy 2. But it does not seem to bounce the screen around where my ipad2 certainly and easily does. In my silverado I am going to use a 3.5 aux and charge cord I ordered to plug it into the factory aux port on my radio. On the buggy I have a marine compact deck that has a USB in and RCA input. For street navigation I am using navfree USA , and I downloaded back country as recommended by others for offroad but have not explored using it yet. Supersize, I cross posted this in my thread but was hoping to get some more info so I went here also.
Took a trip to Wally world and picked up the Samsung. Only heartburn is while it has GPS capability it seems the GPS will only work IF you have a Wi-Fi connection. So says Samsung on the tech line. As I drive from town to town or get in a remote location it would seem that my GPS function would be fucked. Don`t think I want to be stopping at each Tim Hortons for the password for there Wi-Fi. Again I am not a techie but I know on our property in North Michigan there is no Wi-Fi signal. So that means no GPS. Thus I am wondering if this is the right way to go. Can anyone provide any input here ?

I responded in your other thread, but in short, download the app navfreeusa. I'm not sure on the why or how the mapping that comes in it work but it is limited. I assume this is for memory room or storage reasons. Download the free app and select your state or states you want. So far I have used navfree world for Mexico and navfree USA for Arizona and California with out any issues. |

I used my ipad 2 in the lifeproof case for nav/google earth/etc in the woods. It worked well but I hated leaving it in the open jeep and my mom needed a new tablet so I gave it to her. The waterproof case was awesome but a pita to get off to charge the thing. I kept the case btw, $75 and its yours.
