Hooked battery up backwards need help!!!!!
Last night/ this morning, i was working on my truck ( installing train horns and other small stuff) any ways, i had both of the batteries off and i was paying no attention at all when i went to put terminals on the battery and placed them backwards, i noticed some smoke coming from the supply wire running to alternator and quickly realized i fawked up big time. The wire melted covering and part of the loom. After letting it cool i tried placing the battery on again and this time the alt. got hot and just a hair of smoke came from it, To get to the point, did i fry my alternator?
Its on a 96 yukon 6.5 diesel factory. ive also heard people doing this and odds and ends going out such as, tach speedo, raido, other electronic accessories, ect. Just wondering if any one has had any expierience with this type of situation? thanks guy! |

I did the same thing on my dads MJ. swapped in my optima to see if a bad battery was the reason it wouldn't start. not realizing the optima's terminals were reversed. abit of smoke. dont know if i messed anything up, cause we still cant get it going. fingers crossed I didnt make it worse. lol

I did something similar...
Was working on my VW before I went to work and was a bit rushed and did not clear my tools out before i dropped the hood... A wrench fell and hit the positive side of the ignition coild and grounded out... Fried the wiring all the way into the dash when I left the yard... Needless to say... A lot of smoke from under the dash and NO START after that... Fried the wiring all the way back to the ignition switch somehow... I scrapped the car and bought a zuk... Kelly

it's fucked.
you'll be lucky if you only cooked the alternators regulating bits. but it could have done serious harness damage depending on how long it was hooked up. A firend did the same with a motorhome, only it was the battery charger set to jump mode. He sold the camper....

Those are as gay as stacks and a bag of dicks. Try taking them out and see if the truck works again. |

spend some time going through the wiring really good. it typically melts everything that is hot when the battery is off. Worked a fire a while back where the guy did the same thing, got it running and took off down the road, something shorted out and burned it to the ground before we got a truck there.
