head light switch makes cluster go crazy 90 yj

1990 yj

My gauges go crazy when I turn on my head lights. Both my head light and dimmer switches have been taken apart and cleaned repacked with D grease.

I have been able to track it down to the middle contact in my head light switch that feed the dimmer switch. In the Manuel it labels as 72 18BL/RD. It goes to the dimmer switch as 90 18/pk/or and then turns into 52 180or/bk. I have traced it to the Gauge package circuit board connector. And cut it. The gauges still go crazy when I turn the head light on.

I then was wondering if power is back feeding from the dome circuit. I pulled the fuse. It reduces the amount of action on the gauges. But still screws them up.

I was going to try cutting the common ground 99 18BK? Wondering if power is back feeding in.

I have a feeling the issue has something to do with the dome circut. And my wipers dont work any more?

HAS ANYONE HAD A SIMMILAR PROBLEM? ANY SUGESTIONS?

when I turn on my head light it makes my cluster jump all over.
I have tried to cut the power to the cluster and it is still makeing the gauges have faulse reading.
I have to find a back feed of power. I think I have a ground that is back feeding power througt the cluster. It gets energized with the head light switch. There is a blue wire #72 I think that goes from hl switch to Dimmer switch. I have cut it and the spike still happens. I think I am going ot try to put a diod on the ground and see what happens.

I could do with knowing how to test the switchs and relays to trace the source of the problem.

This is usually cause by a bad ground. I had one once where the filament in the taillight bulb broke and was laying across the T/S filament and when I turned on the lights the indicator would come on. if the dash had a poor ground something like this would feed through the gauges. Try disconnecting or removing bulbs one at a time.

Hope this helps

Buy a chilton's manual and verify all wires and connections are in good shape before anything.

Then get a voltmeter and start testing.
