I run 40 amp relays and don't have problems. I think the people that are burning through relays are only using the high speed. There is quite a spike in load to get the high speed spinning, however it is minimal if the fan is already spinning at low speed. Mine are wired very similar to this:
Feeding the low speed fan relay from 87a of the highspeed relay makes the switch seamless, without such a nasty relay burning spike. I have measured the load of low speed only to be a 35 amp spike at start up, and 15 amps continuous. I'll have to measure the high speed one of these days. .

With the TF, I have always used the 70a relay that you find in the same car. Also use a slow burning fusible link as so the high amp starts don't pop it, like the cheap spade fuses do. I also have never had a problem with my wiring, or relays or fuses doing this setup. Also I have my stuff on switches, not a controller.

Yeah, its typical. I had the same problem and couldn't get a reply from him. It had been over 2 weeks so I filed a paypal dispute last night at 8 pm. At 10:22 pm the case was closed and my money refunded. What a great way to do business. The guy doesn't have time to respond to emails but can't wait to give back your money.

Post #7 has the link of where to buy the relay set up---these guys are good---I ordered their relay and extra 190 temp t-stat----the guy called me to check and see if I received everything, because he thought I didn't and by golly he was right--overnighted the missing parts and talked me thru some wiring and other stuff---I highly recommend Hollister Road.

Hey, check out the first page of my build down at the bottom. I just installed a taurus fan, one 70 amp and one 40 amp relay. Hope it helps.

It was 5 weeks from ordering to receiving the controller when I bought from DCControls. I had to threaten cancelling the credit card payment to get any action. Been working fine though for a couple years. I have the variable speed one on a Lincoln MVIII fan.

you can also use a ford superduty ficm relay, same package size as a std 40a relay but able to handle 50a continous duty.. if you go wrecking yard hunting it will be the "grey one" in the box, it has larger spade terminals... .02

Bumping this with a thread from another site with good info. I'm using a Volvo fan, volvo fan controller and dual temp switch from BMW. The Volvo fan looks real similar to Taurus except shroud is more centered and fan looks easier to take off.

Quick shipping and it uses common relays that can be bought at any part store.

hollister road's harness is perfect and works amazing. I had to T off the intake for the ECM sensor and a fan sensor then put the 200* in the back port on the intake and taking temp from the head for the gage. I have block hugger headers so had to wrap them to get a more accurate reading. motor never goes about 210 though.

I also purchased a kit from Hollister Road, it is a very nice kit...fast shipping and easy to deal with. Looking forward to installing it, basically plug and play!

Real informative thread. I'm in the process of installing my Taurus fan on my 87 Chev with sbc 400. My motor runs pretty hot (has a 195 T-stat which I will be changing to 175 or 180 soon). Motor gets hot under duty and will climb to about 235F. It’s a fresh rebuild too, I'm thinking my 4 blade manual fan isn't cutting it. Im wiring the fan with 2 relays (for LO and HI). What do you guys suggest I do for installing? Install the fan on the outside of the rad (grille side) to push cold air through the rad or put it in front of the rad (engine bay side) and push air over the engine? I would like to get rid of my manual fan to free up any extra duty on the motor (I know, probably minimal). But would also like to keep it in case of electric fan failure and extra cooling as well.
What do you guys suggest? Side note: Running a rebuilt 3 core rad. Cheers.

The Taurus fan is designed to pull through the radiator not push. Ditch the manual fan, it won't be needed, it's inefficient, and is just waisting power.

Look at the write up in my previous post just a few up. I prefer Volvo fans the shroud is easier to modify and the fan just plugs into its own relay. 3 wires to hook up and your running.

Do people usually run a fan shroud with the electric fan? I'm seeing pics on the web and alot dont have fan shrouds. Whats the popular opinion?

I just used the factory shroud on the Taurus fan. If you radiator is bigger than that shroud, you could just use it as is by covering what the factory shroud would cover, bit I would try and cover the whole thing.
