Taurus Fan Wiring

I am looking for a solenoid for the high side of a Taurus fan. I originally used a Ford starter solenoid, but quickly burnt out. Anyone have any suggestions?

Talk to darren, aka 12voltguy or seabass. He hooked me up with great high amp relays that I am using for the high speed on my taurus fan.

A bit overkill, but why not?

Don't know anything about that site, just googled it.

Myself and two other buddies run the Hollister Road kit. High quality, works great and they ship quick.

I can't remember what brand I used, but it's a 60A relay that looks like any other foglight relay.

This a good thread. Any tips or tricks should be dropped in here too. Taurus fan questions are all over the site so a dedicated thread would be nice.

I try to only use 1 kind of relay in my rigs, a 40 amp. For the low side I use 1 40 amp, high side I use two in parallel (in each case paired up with 1 or 2 40 amp circuit breakers). They're reasonably easy to find in the middle of nowhere and it cuts down on the number of spares I need. Been working great in 2 Jeeps for 5-6 years now. I don't use high range a ton though, only when low can't keep up which isn't often.

I've wired up a few Taurus fans using the blue relays found under the hood of many mid nineties Nissans. I'll steal the pigtail too cause they'll typically unclip from the fuse box. They are supposedly good for almost 60 amps and I've never seen one fail.

Note: I'm a cheap bastard who would rather build just about anything than buy it, so this is my form of recycling.

I have used these 80 amp relays for years with no issues.. can't find the supplier.. he was overseas but i got them for like 8 bucks..

this is just a google image..

ok.. i found a site that has the exact same ones i use... http://www.uneeksupply.com/80-60-Amp...ay_p_3603.html

that's not where i ordered mine from.. but by looks, it's the same exact relay.. i purchased 8 of them like 4 years ago.. still on my oringinal relay..

That's not what runs the 'good' taurus fans. They are controlled by the CCRM. It's a little box with 4 relays inside that do a few things besides controlling the fan. That box is the number one reason there are so many Tarus' in the junk yards.

what year is a good Taurus fan? Is it pulse width modulated?

Not pulse modulated, should have been, just two speed. Not sure the years, just know what they look like. I've used quite a few over the years.

I have a taurus fan coming and have a question. Can both the low *and* high speed connections be wired to 12v *at the same time*? Or does the low speed need to be disconnected *before* turning on the high speed? I need to know if the fan will burn up if I have both low and high speed connections active. BTW...thanks for the lead on the relays; I have 4 of them coming.

The high and low speed wires can NOT be wired together. The fan will live a very short life if you do. I'm a fan of the Delta Current Control controllers, both the variable speed and the two speed versions. But, there are a lot of write-ups on controlling both speeds with individual relays.

I have (1) Taurus 2-speed fan. Do you know if the DCC 2sp with dual 60amp relays will be the correct choice for this application?

Thanks....

I just checked the DCC site, and I don't see the dual 60 amp version listed. If you are referring to part number 2SP, that is the one that I used on a Colorado with a Lincoln Mark VIII fan. It worked flawlessly. I will be using the same controller in my Cherokee soon.

If you decide to buy one of the DCC controllers, be aware that delivery times can be very long, and customer support is not very good.

Brian Baskin from DCC responded to my email and let me know the SP2 has two 60A relays. So I have one coming for my Taurus fan installation. Thanks!
