winch circuit breaker cutting out and getting hot

i just installed a superwinch lp10000 (10 000lb winch) on my chevy 1500. it came with a circuit breaker so i installed it, my problem is it keeps blowing under load. on my most recent test i put my truck at the bottom of fairly steep hill and attempted to winch up it in neutral. the winch was not working that hard i thought and it barley even got warm, however the circuit breaker was extremely hot to hot to touch for more than 2 seconds and i could not even get half way up the hill before it blew, the wire was also cool not even warm. i was winding my rope around the first layer on the drum (one layer already on the drum to be clear, NOT winding directly on the drum), so it should have still had plenty of power. im thinking of removing the circuit breaker, the starter on a vehicle is not fused so why on a winch? does anyone elses winches have breakers? anyone els not run a breaker?

ditch the breaker
neither of my winches have them,I just check the wires every 6months to see if any of the cable ties broke or the wire is rubbing anywhere

either ditch the breaker or get one rated for 3-400 amps.

Being a 10k winch and probably having a "5hp" motor its gonna pull somewhere around 400amps at full load. 400amp breaker would allow you to max out the winch while still providing protection against a short circuit.
