Need help wiring an old Warn winch.
I have an old Warn Bellview 6000 and need to wire the power or hot side. The winch probably won't see a geat deal of use, it came with my 68 Chevy K20 4x4. Will be using a toggle or push pull switch for power in the cab along with the cable controls for the brake and clutch. So, my question is,what kind of solenoid would I use between the battery and switch and how do I wire it?
Thanks |

Better late then never.
I had a similar question. Here is the thread I started http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/gener...ew-wiring.html
What have I decided to do with mine??? well i an't sure. But right now I am leaning towards wiring two sets of two solenoids in parallel and then puttting the two sets in series. Does that make sense? The amp pull on a winch can be like 430 amps! Probably over kill but look at my sig......I am a noob to wiring and i am still debating on a inline fuse for my winch? Some say yes some say no.

you just need a relay with a 12 VDC coil
Then the relay contacts need to be heavy enough to carry the load. Those warn winch relays will be fine but a tad pricey. I can see if your far from home you might want to carry a spare relay just in case it fails Without seeing your winch or pulling a diagram from some place it is only a guess. Take and run a wire from the run side of the ignition switch to your switch then to the relay some relays ground through the attaching hardware . If you want this switch hot all the time run from the battery installing a fuse rated for the draw of the relay coil. Your heavy cable off the battery to one large post of the relay the other heavy cable to your load (winch) Have any questions feel free to pm me |

My opinion is if you use a single solenoid get a big one rated for amperage your winch can potentially pull. I should of got a big one from 12volt guy from the being but I am going to wire in some warn solenoids in parallel instead. I know people run single 100 amp solenoids or even smaller but how can your winch preform to its potential if it can not draw its full amperage? Am I missing something here? These Winches can pull 400 plus amps then why use single solenoid rated for 100?
