wiring 5050 led?

I want to use this Lerway led strip as a dome light. I removed the 2 connectors, connected the +&- wires on one end together, connected the wires on the other end to 12v battery (+ to +, -to-). The led strip got hot and the wires start to melt. The strip has 18 LEDs and each has a resistor with "151" printed on it.

Was I supposed to use an additional resistor?
Is this the wrong type of LED?
How should it get wired?

Thanks,
Chan

Just cap them off so they can't short together or touch anything. Fold over the wires and use a piece of heat shrink.

By shorting those two wires together you created a dead short, just like putting a wire across the terminals on your battery-----------4-500 amps or more. Sounds like you had it on a circuit in your truck, so the current would be up to what your fuse was at.

These LED lights come with the smallest wire possible, not capable of carrying any extra current, so they smoke pretty easy.

your bigger problem is this
wires should be fused to protect the wiring

Thanks. Now they are on the fused dome light circuit. I was just testing them with a spare battery to make sure they worked b4 installing.
