No offense, but if I was dropping $350 for a LED light it would be on a more established brand name. $350 is about 7X what I would be willing to pay for a dome light. Compare your prices to Rigid and you will understand why we are all choking over them.

Perimeter Enhancement Light
Fixed Link above too BigBlue&Goldie... on a more established brand name WHELEN ENGINEERING COMPANY, INC. Established 1952 Just because you don't know about it doesn't mean it's not established. Ask anyone on Pirate that has worked in the emergency services and they will know about Whelen and it's solid reputation. Also, $350 is about 7X what I would be willing to pay for a dome light This is not a dome light, this is an exterior scene light. It is used to light a very large area outside of a vehicle so someone could work efficiently on something like a vehicle in a pit situation or a person in an emergency situation. One more thing Whelen 7000 Lumen 7"Flood or Spot $510.88 Rigid 7900 Lumen 20" Bar $699.99 Whelen 14000 Lumen 14" Flood or Flood/Spot $891.56 Rigid 11850 Lumen 30" Bar $999.99 Not exactly apples to apples but in the same ballpark And... No offence taken |

That helps, but how about some real life pictures? Like others have said, LED lights are often disappointing and don't live up to the claims.

I am working on getting all (or close to) of our lighting products together for a nighttime photo shoot since I know that is what everyone likes to see. I will post it up when it is ready.

Whelen is a well known lighting company. Probably more well known than Rigid and others relatively new to the offroad LED market.
Whelen is unknown because they really don't make products that we (at Pirate) would generally buy. They generally don't fit our needs. Now, once you wind up in the expedition forum, they do apply. About the only reaon you will replace a Whelen light is because the tech got newer or your eyes got worse (me), probably not because the light "got bad" The Whelen lights that are on my MH above are over 20 years old and you will not see any UV yellowing. Say that for a Honda or most other clear lensed light. That was the best and brightest "flush scene light" at the time, and I shopped hard to get them at a price I could afford. (Yes they ARE overpriced, because the general public and millions are not their market.) I had to find that guy who had a shelf full that hadn't moved them in a couple years. That was before Ebay, so now we have more options if you can wait. Actually, I just bought a 7000 Lumen Whelen firetruck "scene light" that is comparable to the Riigid format for $350. Retail around $900....and around $1000 from Rigid lookalikes on Ebay. Yes, I have the Rigid lights also. I have not had the need for the long bars, as I already have several Hella HID Rallye lights for running the dunes. I have bought several of the single lights for my motorcycles and quads that are very stator wattage weak. They are awesome for that application. Their battery pack helmet light is killer also. At one of the shows Rigid or a competator had about 5 of the single lights across the top of their trailer. They were a dud in my opinion from both looks, practicality, and light output. That was the place for the Whelen option as 5x $100 is not cheap, and a wireing nightmare. Don't get me wrong. I would not replace my existing less bright more watt intensive $60 lights for the $350 dollar option either. But I am only using it 5% of the time also. If I was building new and knew that I would have it for 10-20 years then I would definitely SHOP for Whelen, and only put ONE of those bright suckers where I needed it. P.S. That big light would keep neighbors up all night also...but it would take 100 shots to kill it. |
