I always thought it would be cool to use the back portion of a VW camperbus on a mog. It seems like it would be a bit smaller and more conducive to trail use than the huge boxes I usually see on them. I think I'd use an early (pre 68) with a small pop top. Anyone ever see anything like this?

Those 404 Radio Trucks and Field Ambulances are cool. Now if you could add a pop-up for more headroom, it would be a cool setup for camping.

I like Mogs, i REALLY like Mogs...
But they have a fairly low top speed, usually 50-65 mph. I'm thinking for N. American travel that limited top speed would make the larger distances take a really long time to travel between. Could you imagine driving between say Michigan out to Utah, Colorado or California at only 50 mph? Take you a week of straight driving!

For other countries though, Central and South America etc. I can imagine that their highway system is not nearly as well developed as ours is, so they might very well be better suited for those regions...

Oh, the headroom issue...
If i was to get Mog for this type of travel, i would have a camper custom built for the back by a company. Something like Alaskan Camper. They can make campers where the top 2' of the unit raises and lowers when necessary.
When you're on the road you lower it to keep the aerodynamics and COG in check, and then when you park for the night you raise it up and have plenty of headroom for standing and walking inside.

That is exactly what I have. A 416 Unimog with an Alaskan Camper. I got one used for $1000 and it fit right on the flat bed. I would send pics but I can't figure out how to do that, I just end up with little boxes with an x in it.

I think you can regear them for higher highway speed.
