Who here has genset built into their expedition rig?
Been thinking of installing a 2.7k (3.5k surge) genset powered by 6.5hp Lister Petter diesel on my burb.
Any of you install a genset in your expedition rigs, or? |

Too much noise for me ,even with a little 1000w Yamaha that makes 50db.
I have long cord and place the genny behind a rock or something.

I have a 4K Honda permant mount unit that I was going to use but like rosco said it's too noisy. I am going to build a compartment that will fit my 3K Honda but it will be removeable so I too can put it behind a rock when setting up for a few days.

Maybe some kind of baffle over the end of the existing exhaust pipe. I use my genny as last resort back up . Too many people get upset in camping grounds. I was camping here a while back and the neighbours on the other side of the hill had a cheep chinese pile of crap genny that ran all night at full bore. ![]() Sounded like a chinese opera going over a cliff ![]() It even drowned out the relatively pleasant sounding power generation at the local gold/nickel mine a klm away. You can see my blue genny on the far left . I think this was early morning.. Note the big round fluro light in the back. Its a lamp for working in confined spaces because it doesnt make much heat. Its great for camping as its only 30 watts and gives a good white light ![]()

Genset install
Been thinking about exhaust and sound control, the main vehicle exhaust can be used as well as closed cell foam on inside of box or container unit would be mounted in.
Low rpm diesel I think is best way to go and the Lister Petter has found a home in the far reaches of this planet. Surely, those of you who are well traveled have heard the putt, putting of a low rpm lister petter making power hundreds miles from or to no-where. I'm not one for the established campsites but temp camp setup of like minded in some remote area is fair game. A genset no matter how small fills the recharging need of dead batteries if an when such problem happens. I advocate dual alternators and dual even multi-battery configurations too while not forgetting alternate means like wind or solar gens. |
