Off-Road Battery's

since i have added a winch and some other stuff.

i think a new battery would be good.

i've heard a lot of bad things about Optima's, i'm thinking about getting a gel battery.

does anyone have any experience with these.

when i was surveying we used a small 12V wheel chair gel battery.

it worked great on our GPS equipment, it would hold a charge all day long.

I run yellow top Optimas and love them. I have them in all my rigs and putting a set in my offroad trailer soon.

Odyssey and be done with it.
Expensive but last twice as long. Work as a deep cycle, work as a starting battery.
Optima is not a bad battery but they do not last long in my rigs for some reason, three years is about it.
LOVE my Odysseys.

I've had really bad luck with Optimas over the last few years. A friend turned me on to this and I have been really happy with it.

Depending on your rig and willingness to do a little fab work, you might be able to fit two in the stock location. I just built a two battery tray for my wife's Tacoma.

think i'm going to go with this one.

not sure on the warranty. i have not been able to find one locally yet. sometimes i hate living in such a small town.

they do have a deep cycle. it has an 18 month free replacement warranty.

http://www.exide.com/products/automo...bital_XCD.html

here are the specs
http://www.exide.com/pdf/orbital_xcd...d_features.pdf

i'm going to see if i can get one up in montana. not sure on the price yet.

It mainly depends on how your race truck is set up.

You might get more replys on a ‘speed’ forum vs this place.

I only asked because the link took me to a 16 volt battery, which I assumed he was recommending...

a friend of mine who owns a battery store said the old optimas were good batteries but now they are using inferior lead inside their batteries and so they are not worth a damn now.

I bought two of the biggest red tops last year for my duramax. Not worth the powder to blow to hell. Spectacular at first, but now I can't hold a charge for more than 2 days.

I took them to the dealer and he load tested them fine, so I get none of the 10 year warranty!?!

It's true, I've seen lots of failures, melt-downs and explosions with newer Optimas, I'd rather have a factory battery than one of those POSs.

I run the Exide Orbital marine deep cycle batteries and they fully kick ass.

I would recommend a Diehard Platinum. Same as an Odessy but longer warranty. Cheaper too. A lot more then an Optima thoguh.

I have one of each, (an'03 Optima, '08 Diehard). I will let you know... (different rigs)

The Odyssey/DieHard Platinum is a great battery.

Another better-than-Optima-and-Exide choice is the Deka Intimidator. You can get them for a decent price rebadged at CarQuest.

After you chose

Perhaps, finding a place for another battery would be a good idea. Mount low and between axles is best to keep low cg.

Isolate the batteries and you don't have the worry of both being dead for one reason or another.

While my burb came w/dual batteries I'm working on installing 2 more under chassis while doing my genset install.

I too owned an Optima, didn't last long. About a year and 1/2. Cheaper mexican batteries last 3-4 years, the Delco green eye ones last 5 years but can't get them anymore down here.

I've ran Optimas, and Odysseys. Odyssey is nicer, and what I run in my camper shell as a 2nd battery. But my favorite is still a pair of wal mart batteries I picked up used from a guy in '05. He bought them new in '04. They are trolling motor batteries. I want to say a group 27 deep cycle. Both have been run dead. One read 1v before I charged it (over 3 days) back to spec. Worked perfect. I put them in my truck, after killing a red top optima every 1-3 months.
I can't say enough about these things. Been in multiple vehicles, without any issues at all.
