Sticking my neck out here...
Thinking outside the box, and I know that means I probably lost it, but I have been thinking of ways to travel with the family lately. Have a f350 cc longbed and thought of a popup camper, but they are generally expensive, and way too small for 5 people. I see tent trailers all the time selling for next to nothing, and thought why not rip out the axle and mount it up on top of the bed. Might have to space it up a couple inches so the front clears the cab when opened, and might have to get a small ladder to get in and out, but would sleep more people.
What am I missing? |

you would always have 2,000 loaded above your bed unless you come up with a way to remove it.

Sounds like a round about way to get a roof top tent? Although with your method you would have the stove/refer that RTT don't generally have. Seems like it would be kind of heavy to have in your bed while traveling off road, I'm guessing 1500# plus your other gear and supplies. It sounds like it will sticking out the sides a bit as well.
If you are gonna go the popup trailer route, I'd just strengthen the trailer by lifting, armor, tires, and maybe a stronger axle, and then tow that.

How would that give you any more space than a bed camper? You're still limited by the length and width of the bed, except now you won't be making use of the space inside the bed.
What about a bed camper with a rooftop tent on top of it? Look here for ideas http://www.expeditionportal.com/foru...splay.php?f=75
