cheap sportsmobile style roof popup?

so its WAY after midnight...

and Ive been up WAY too long...

had a great day with the family...and expecting twins very soon...

my half-awake idea...

sportsmobile camper top is $5000...and with it on..my van WONT fit in the garage..(I know..easier to go smaller tires or taller door..(maybe taller door))

I already own this..

1985 E250 6.9 TURBO diesel C6..33in tires..(bfg commercial traction TA's)..dual tanks..dual AC..power power power...144K..runs just frickin FINE!!..loaded out with the gauges..(installed by me as well as the turbo kit last winter)...bought it 3 years ago..and drive it occasionaly..mostly towing my sploder and hauling stuff on a trailer or inside..and a perfectly flat roof w ribbing..

its already been converterd by me to 4 captains chairs and a fold down bed/couch..seats 6...(family count is soon to be 5..)...

and take this..

and put it on a very low mounting rack to make it so you can access it thru a rear sunroof over the back seat...that way you can keep a low profile..and retain the ability to pop it off and store it when your not using it
(and maybe get a mount for my 09 jk 4dr for when me and the boy decide to run for our lifes when his 2 sisters and their mom (wife) decide to try and kill each other for 5 days out of every month...

I think its do-able with a removable hatch inside the pop-up...knock it up inside after you open it...then replace it when your in so the boggie-man cant grab your feet...

with the way the van is setup now it sleeps 3 adults comfortably on the installed seats...the rooftop would be the "parents suite" and the kids in the regular passsenger area..

and yea...theres plans for bumpers..already has OBA w tank..nice tunes..needs DVD and maybe solar panels..(we really dont go for more than a weekend)...
got plans for grey and clean water tanks...most of its all gonna be hidden and accessable from the outside as I REFUSE to camp when its too cold (pussy)...and with 3 days MAX at camp...Im prolly ok for a shower till I get home..but a privacy tent and 5gal will make me more approchable... and will make the wife happier with the kids that already play in the dirt...

a nice retractable awning too..anything to help!!

ya think it'll work?

your idea is fine. your situation is similar to mine, my kids are older, and don't go like they used too.. Teenagers-- SO -I am planning an off road trailer, my tj can pull, for additional space, and tent mount. I also have an f 250 diesel, would be nice to have the option.. Might be something for you to consider.. build it light enough for the JK, then choose your destination. When the females settle down, you can hook it to the diesel. Also eliminates the height issue.

the snag with the trailer is that I would like to also tow my trail truck..and we're lookin at downsizing to side by sides and a couple quads for the kids...so a trailer camper would need to have a 22ft trailer deck..and not as "adventureable" to haul a 22ft'r just for the camper..

Blah, blah, blah Yup, stick the tent up there and hang it inside the garage when you don't need it.

...Now for my real point of interest...how do you like those commercial T/A's?

Since the TracEdge's are NLA, I've gone to the Dunlop R/T or whatever they are....they're a little "squishier" than the TracEdges...

...back to the real thread....

if your van is really good mechanical shape - buy a older duelly r/v with a worn out gas engine or bad trans and do a swap. cut the fornt off yours and "glue" it to the rear of the r/v. 5 people in a van will get cramped?

I thought about doing that...but Id much rather retain the look and utility of just having a vanbody...5 will only get cramped when they get older..and by then I dont want them going with me..

we're lookin to do some more camping/fishing and exploring with the family rather than me headding out for a weekend of wheelin and leavin the wife/kids at home to destroy the house...

I did tell steph that when we head out west on trips..we're leavin so its DARK when drivin thru indiana and illinois...cus as you know from all the driving to hannibal...theres not anything to look at anyway..
