I'll post up my new ride in a few. I'm excited that I'm back in a van, a 4x4 van to be exact! The interior is pretty set up but I'm not sure if it will suit my needs.
Nice van! I'm just starting the teardown process, it will be a long term project, what with gf, three kids, work, and a construction project already on the go, its all 99-04 F350 parts from donor truck
You borrowed my strap when yours broke pulling out that class-C RV sometime during KOH week. Sweet van, I wish I would have checked it out a little closer.:smokin:
I wanted to jump it but not screw up the van. The front soaked up the bump but the back end hopped. I was hitting it at 70. When I finally found something to get all 4 in the air, the landing was too hard and I only did it once...no pics.
I had a meeting at Glen Helen yesterday about the upcoming Ultra 4 race next week. On the way home I realized we were in the van with new, untested tires, and a mountain range full of trails between us and home. We took the higher road and stopped pounding pavement!
We didn't have anybody following us, nor did we have our normal off-roading supplies...so I promised to "take it easy".
Honestly, I haven't had the chance to wheel with them yet (where traction was an issue). On the highway they are excellent and quiet. These are the load range E tires and I'm curious how they'll perform compared to the Goodyear MTRs that were on it.
I have a very long (8 days) trip across Utah coming up at the end of October...all dirt! I should have a good idea pretty soon. I'll be in a lot of mud, sand, and rocks.
Alright you van folks, I've got some questions for ya . I haven't had the opportunity to work on an expedition van until one recently rolled into my shop, though I've always enjoyed them!
So a customer brought me a solid axle swapped diesel Chevy 2500 express van. He's pretty confident it's an early Quigley conversion before they started going IFS, so that's pretty cool. Anyhow it's getting front and rear bumpers, propane tank relocation, rock sliders, roof rack, and a side mounted ladder.
I don't have a ton of pics worthy of putting in the thread yet, but I'll show you guys what I have going on when I get home. What I was wondering about, is how everyone attaches ladders? I've seen some that seem to clamp onto the drip rail, but haven't seen the specifics. I'm sure I could come up with something, just seeing if you guys have any recommendations!
I haven't had a van with a ladder but if you mount it on the back, the drip rail won't work. Mounting one on the side seems silly to me with all the branches and rocks that would clean it off.
Why not build off the rear bumper/tire carrier? It doesn't have to be a traditional ladder, just somewhere to put your feet.
Vans rock! I really don't understand why more off-roaders/campers don't use them. In stock form they are boring, but with some modifications they are super versatile.
There are a few version of espar heaters that you can get . I need to get something soon and don't have any where to mount a traditional rv heater .
Ebay should have lots . There pretty much what semi truck use .most run on diesel and propane ones can be had too
My evolving moto hauler/minimalistic adventure mobile.
It's a 79 which was, from what I was told converted when it was near new with running gear from a then also newish Suburban. The conversion was done extremely well, and must have been a massive amount of work.
Here is my 1999 Express quigley, It was originally built for Cellcom Wireless company. I bought it with around 200k miles on it and over the last winter and spring I went over almost everything on the van making it derivable and dependable.
The Begining
after a bunch of hard work and the help of many others this is the current state. It is not yet finished, but far enough along to get some use out of it.
I really do love this van, I had 5 people 5 peoples winter gear, enough tools for crewing on a rally car and mountain bikes, and still had plenty of room for everyone to be comfortable.
Ok some of these trip pics are making me extremely jealous of all you van owners . EMIEVEL you seriously push that thing! Too cool to see. One of these days I'd love to own one, in the meantime I get to enjoy building stuff for 'em haha.
I wonder how many were made? It would be cool to find one of those!
