6.0 glow plug issue

This truck is driving me nuts, one thing after another and now when it's 40 degrees out I have to plug it it, now this morning it's 25 degrees and starts perfect from being plugged in.
Last night I tested all glow plugs at the glow plug controller harness and got 1.0 ohms on all 8 plugs, tested main power to both and got 12.22 volts, tested red wire with key on engine off and got 12.?? Volts, tested wire from ficm to green plug but not the way I was told to do it, I was suppose to unhook the ficm plug and check resistants from ficm to gpcm but I couldn't get to the ficm since it was 11.30pm so I just turned key on and tested volts to pins 8 and 9 and got 0.06 volts. So that is the part I'm not sure about from the ficm. I don't have a amp meter but I'm pretty sure the glow plugs aren't working as if it does happen to start when cold it's ruff as hell shaking and loud rattling, plugged in it starts really good and smooth, does this sound like the glow plug module. I would like to buy parts this morning because my electric bill is gonna suffer lol. I don't know what else to check.

gpcm has nothing to do with the ficm, it is pcm controlled. sounds like the gpcm failed if the plugs ohm o.k.

Replace the gpcm. If you feel inclined check the harness from the gpcm on the passenger valvecover to where it feeds both banks. I have only changed 1 glowplug on a 6.0 that failed. I even worked at international when they came out with the 6.0 in '02 for almost 5 years. The harness will wear on the intake sometimes too.

the gpcm is just basicly a relay, if you have power to your glow plugs than its doing its job, sounds to me that you have some bad injectors, they really start giving ya problems when the temps get dowm. the spool valves get worn and the cold thick oil doesnt help much either. how many miles are on your truck? also does it clear up when it warms up? you can try the additves like rev-x. havent personally delt with them fisrt hand, i just replace the injectors. you need to get ahold of a factory scanner like an ids so you can see the cylinder balance chart and see what cylinder is missing. also there is a pcm update for better cold starts but by your description doesnt sound like it well help much. if ya need any insight or further help pm me. i work on these all day.

good luck

also check ficm voltage, anything below 45 volts is no good, and will give ya troubles. most of the time you can resolder the joints and avoid replacing it.

Got the gpcm replaced, it now starts when cold! I have to let it sit and warm up for about 20 mins and it still misses pretty bad but clears up after about 5 miles. Overdrive and the truck shakes till fully warm. I have ficm on my list and already made my mind up if it was bad to get a 58v. Truck has 128k on it and so far I have replaced icp, oil cooler, newest ford flash, cleaned turbo, #6 injector, icp harness, and now the gpcm, new y pipe and manifold gaskets, egr block off kit and cleaned intake out. I have to get a new bolt for the water separator since PO has it rounded off so I have yet to change fuel filters or drain the water which needs to be done. I've only had the truck since like feb and need to get on that! Also seems the truck ran better when it had whatever oil in it from the dealer I bought it from and I switched it to mobil del 15w40 and it just seems that's when all my cold start problems started was the first oil change. What oil do you guys run and if synthetic how do you get all the Dino out of the oil cooler and such? Thanks for all your help but I'm about to ditch this ford and trade it in but I would be 4k short of paying it off and its probably going to cost me 4k to get it running right which sucks!

I've been hearing good things about rev x. You might want to give that stuff a try but IMO the only way to cure your sticktion is to replace the injectors.

The only right way to fix it is to sell it and never buy a 6.0 again or yank it and put a cummins in it! Truck wouldn't start when it was 32 out last night! It would barely hit, plugged it up over night and started perfect. I'm going to do everything I can to get thru the winter without replacing hard parts so I can get my 4.3 swap done on my zuk and just drive that. Going to ck ficm sometime if I find time and change oil to 5w40 rotella t6 and fuel filters and maybe rev-x and see what happens. I'll report back and maybe do a video.

Have you checked the FICM yet? Just to make sure it is good. It should not dip below 45 volts when starting.

Give rev-X a try as well. I believe you may possibly have stiction issues with your injectors which rev-x should help clear up. I also run all synthetic oil in my truck.

cold start sticktion will be a bad or several bad injectors, ficm m-power should be checked as mentioned. whenever a ficm has failed, check the batteries and alternator also for low output.

When I got the truck in march the batteries where new but I will check them and alternator and ficm. Going to put on a high idle mod also. It's definitely injector stiction. Blows white smoke, misses, get it going and when it hits overdrive it bucks and jerks. Rough idle till the oil warms up then purrs real nice but every once in awhile while while idle I hear it start to lope and idle down. So heres my list of things to do
1. Ficm voltage
2. Change oil to 5w40 syn
3. Check batteries and alt
4. Fuel filters
5. Possibly rev-x a try
Anything to add to that list? Anything I should add on the fuel side?

Some guys have had luck running a two stoke outboard oil in the fuel, half a quart to a tank of fuel, tw3c or something like that. The only things that helped mine were getting the latest tune where it cycles the injectors before cranking, 5w40 synthetic, which helped the most, and eventually replacing the bad injectors, which fixed the problem. Defiantly check ficm voltage while cold running and cranking. My ficm died too and made it run terrible cold, just like injectors sticking.

new batteries are usually the dead giveaway of alt/ficm issues...
