92 F350 Crew Cab 4x4 7.3 with Banks turbo

Looking at a new tow rig and this one came up. I really want an OBS and it seems like this one with the Banks Sidewinder turbo and exhaust setup is better than the factory turbos of that era?

Anyone still supporting these motors? I searched and found a thread from 08 with everyone beating up Banks and saying they werent supporting the 7.3s and all these other places that still supported the 7.3 and now all those links only show support for 94.5+ PSDs, not the IDI and Banks is still selling the turbo and exhaust for these trucks?

Anything to look for and watch out for on these trucks and motors?

Friend has the banks on his 93 4x4 7.3L van and I had a '94 ats/ factory on mine and the difference was funny. With both our pumps maxed out him auto me manual both 4:10. He was on 35"s me on 37"s and I would have 5-6 easy car lengths on him by 60. He gets like 8-10psi non wastgated and I was getting 15 gated.

ATS and HyperMax still support them.Hypermax is your best bet for it though. All they care about is the International diesels

yea but holy fuck, for 2k i would just buy a blown up gasser f350 and swap a cummins in it.
the cummins swap is becoming cliche, but for the cost of the turbo i wouldnt dare fawk with an idi

ATS has zero support for the I I power plants. However, they can be built, somewhat. They are not fast, but they are dependable

I needed a turbo drain grommet and I called ats and they pulled one from a gasket set and sold it to me for. 5$ iirc.
I'm still trying to sell my 7.3 turbo setup. Comes with a complete engine and trans though. Only need a to4b compressor to replace the too small to4e .50 on there now. It's all setup for a intercooler too

Ooooooolllllllddddddd video of that thing

burn out with the old 7.3l idi turbo diesel - YouTube

That hardly means they support the engine. Hell, I can order a turbo drain gasket from just about any shop that deals with turbo's.

A Cummins swap would have been my first suggestion

Actually what I meant was that the truck already had the banks turbo and exhaust, etc. There is also a 95 with less miles and seems to be in better overall shape with the turbo diesel so I will be taking a look at both.

Swamps Diesel in LaVerne TN. I had Banks kit with "baby swamps" injectors and their tuner on my 95 drw cc manual. Truck got totaled in a hail storm last year. Hated to loose it. Best tow drivetrain I've ever driven.

sooooo basically what youre saying is, someone out there is going to get a sweet motor out of the junkyard?

not that baby swamps are any bigger than the stock 99-03 injectors minus the fact they were single shots opposed to split shot

160cc 80% (or bigger) flow over factory or GTFO

Johnathan Ryan and David @ Swamp's don't do much with the IDI 6.9 & 7.3's.Mostly the 7.3 PSD.I wonder what ever happen to J.Ryan's old "Swamp Donkey" F350.Now that was a bad truck

Wow.. Ok so the grommet that I'm speaking of is a ats specific thing. They still had a bunch of the stuff for the idi setup when I asked him.

Idi

I have a 92 with the idi and banks turbo. It will build more boost than the engine can handle stock. I wired the wastegate shut and it was at 20 psi and climbing when I let out of it. Any more than about 14 psi and your asking for headgasket failure without studs.

As far as how they run, mine has the pump maxed out, intercooler from a superduty and I also run methanol. It will pull with a first gen stroke all day long. Nothing stellar, but it's solid. The IDI's also have more low end grunt than any of the powerstrokes. Probably due to the higher compression ratio. The higher compression lets you stay off the brakes a little more when your dragging down a grade loaded too.

There's nowhere near the aftermarket support for the IDI compared to the stroke, but you can still get every part and piece for them. There are torque grind cams, bigger injectors, higher flowing pumps.... just depends on where you want to go with it, and how much money you want to spend.

If you go with the IDI, make sure to check the ph in the coolant. 7.3 IDI's are prone to an early death if the coolant isn't monitored. It will pit the cylinder walls bad enough that you start getting coolant in the cylinders. My first one died this way.

They are every bit as dependable as a stroke, just not as easy to mod.

I agree with that Broncoguy.Cavitation around the cylinders in the water jacks is what also killed the first engine in my 96.It is recommended to add FW-16,I think that is it,coolant treatment every 15K-30K.
