Weekend wheeler

Today I got a pleasant surprise, a 95 explorer for free. The catch no reverse and 200k on the OD. So first of all any ideas on the reverse problem, it went out gradually then went to nothing. (automatic trans) Recently I had the planetary explode in my ranger and it went out straight away so i'm thinking something else.
Now the fun stuff, what should I do to it for CHEAP off road fun (aside from fixing the trans) its pretty much stock and will be used primarily off road in the desert and maybe some light rock work. Any ideas welcome!

cut the fenders out, slap on some 33s and beat the shit out of it till it breaks.

i'll be picking it up sunday, so pics then. As for upgrades this is 100% a project, and having previously driven through the desert here what could I do to make the ride better? its a 95 and I think its got torsion bar suspension which is hard to find any kind of kit for anybody heard of a kit for these, or would a kit for a 96 and up work?

If it had the push button 4x4 then the accuator usually sticks. crawl under the rig and beat on the "shift box thing" with a hammer while somebody hits the dash button. happened to my 93 ranger all the time and the "fix" worked about a dozed times...just start out tapping it lightly and then really wack it if it doesnt start working.

Oh and you should really check on those Thornbirds, FatDan is a kind manered person....easy to deal with.

Ok so I got it up on jack stands today to remove the trans, but before I did I ran it in 4x4 and the front drive shaft turns but not the CV shafts. There are some vacuum lines going to something on the axle shaft on the passenger side. 1 what is this thing, 2 could it be the reason I have no 4x4?

Fatdan loves the PM's as well, so I'd try that first.

Send a message via Yahoo to 77mud
There was a set of 33" thornbirds near me for sale, i can get ya the number, id also put a minimum of 6" suspension lift preferably blocks in the rear, and put in 6" body lift that way you'll have plenty of clearance

Thanks all for the help and comments so far, I'm not to the point of new tires just yet but good info and I will definitely use it in the future. An update, the 4x4 problem seemed to be a blown fuse, but the trans is out so I will find out this weekend if thats the fix. only one door still opens and it still smells like sour milk. A little closer to getting her out in the desert, and I can't wait.
Also sick jump with the explorer what year is it?
