Can a C4 hold a 302?

Is a C4 going to hold against a 302 or should I continue to search for a C6? I can get a good deal on a C4 otherwise I wouldn't even consider it. Any idea how much hp and torque a stock C4 is suppose to hold? It is from a 85 Bronco with a 351 motor

A C4 should be fine behind a stock 302 and also uses less horsepower than a C6. If I remember correctly a C6 takes 60-65 hp to operate and a C4 is around 40-45 hp.

Key words are "stock 302". Now throw in the extrem use that you are going to put it through. I would keep trying to find a c6 but that is me.

if it has any serious power going threw it i would have someone build it to take it. i know a few racer guys who have put 4-500 hp through them. but they did build it to handle it. and if you are putting it behind some serious power c4 or c6 will need to have someone take a look at it to make sure it will hold up

I have a freshly built C-6 w/ less than 500 miles. It's in a 66' bronco. If you're interested let me know, I'm in the process of changing to an AOD and need to sell it soon. It is a short shaft C-6 and includes the adapter to a NP205.

I run a good 300 horse past my c4 as a daily driver and as a crawler. It has yet to fail me. Clutch packs just went bad. But thats no big deal. No breakage to speak of.

The C6 is great for all out strenght. The C4 can handle plenty of power, I run the over sized clutch packs and have no problems behind my built 351w.

I like the C4 since it is smaller and lighter. The C6 is great if you can give up a little more space and take more weight.

C4 with a 302

Not only should it hold up it has very good potential if you ever need to "upgrade". There are literally 100's of 5.0streetstrip cars around here in thu good ole southeast running C4's built to various levels. A close friend of mine ran a 306 Vortech aided 5.0 for an entire season with a C4 and had no tranny problems. His block was a Bennett prepped deal dynoed at 525 with the 'charger and a little spray.
Now for the 4x4 content. I run a C4 behind a 395hp 357 windsor, D60s and LARGE swampers!

ok. Thanks for the help guys. I'll get a C4 or C6, whichever I can find first. Maybe you guys can help me out with this.. I posted it somewhere else but didn't get any help.

The trans is from an 85 Bronco. It has a 351 bolted to the trans right now, but that might not be the stock motor. It is a floor shifter and I don't remember the rear axle.

The guy told me it was a C4(but didn't know).... do you think it is a C4, C6 or AOD? Does the AOD use a floor shift or electric column shift? I'm supposed to buy it this weekend if I want it, but I still don't know what it is.

It should be a C6 if it is still stock. As far as the floor shifter, that opens up a whole new world. If it is a 3 spd then it should be either the C6 or the C4, 4 spd should be the AOD. Why the floor shifter if stock, maybe the column shifter got worn out.

Take a look under the thing, if it is a 3 spd the C6 will have a cast in bellhousing. The C4 you will see that it can be unbolted.

Is this true for all C6s and all C4s? Does the AOD have a 2 piece housing (the bellhousing can be unbolted)
