difference between a high boy and low boy

What is the difference between a ford high boy and a low boy I went to get a lift and I donít know what mine is I have pics of my truck on my site http://kx311.2y.net

Unless the grill or doghouse has been changed, you have either a 78 or a 79. With that said, it is a low boy.

The lowboys ran from 77 1/2 thru 79.

The most easily noted differance is that a factory highboy will have a divorced transfer case, while the lowboys have a married tcase.

other differences, incase you were wondering are.

highboys:
FE motors (360, 390)
arched front springs
ram assist steering
divorced tcase
in cab tank

Lowboys:
351M/400 Bolt in for 460's :0\
flat 2 pack front spring
push pull steering (feat. true power steering)
married tcase
inboard frame tanks (2)

Highboy is a factory 4" lift and I believe was only available from '72-'77. I think what you might be refering to incorrectly as a lowboy is the regular non-highboy suspension.

The highboys were taller, but I wouldn't call it a "factory lift" as much as that's just how they were built. This is back when a truck was a damn truck, not a highway cruiser,but the lower ones were a step in that direction.

The 77.5/79 trucks, 150-350, sit at damn near the same hight. The older F100s and F150s sat relativly the same as the 78/79s, it's really only the older F250s and F350s (highboys) that were taller. Why, I can't answer. BUT, one of the biggest reasons the 78/79s were lower is the same reson todays SUVs and trucks are more car like. That's what more people wanted. It is much easier to get into a 78/79 lowboy than it is the earlier highboys even in stock form.

Really, about the only good thing of the highboys is the divorced tcase IF you need one for something.

If it were a highboy you woudn't need much of a lift to fit bigger tires. My 76 highboy had a 3" body lift and 39.5" swampers. I had the 39's on there without a lift before I swaped in the new front clip. It did take a little wotk with the sledge on the fenders but they fit ( old clip) .

Hmmm I have conflicting answers here I have a 79 f250 with the 460 conversion it has the "factory" 4 inch block lift I have 37 inch tires on it and they fit with no rubbing. And I donít have the divorced transfer case. So I have one person telling me that itís a highboy and I have others saying that itís a lowboy. All these answers are confusing me. I told myself to not get into this, but I couldn't resist
'Hi-Boy', 'Low-Boy', 'High-Boy', 'Lo-boy'. They are all Nicknames given to the trucks by the owners. Not a Ford Name.

As for why the pre-77 1/2 F-250 4x4 sit higher, look at the frame over the front axle. It is almost flat compared to the '77 1/2-'79 frame. there is only 3" between the spring and the bump-stop. Calling this a 'factory 4" lift' is ludicrous, the suspension can't go any lower as it is. BTW, this frame 'style' (flat) goes all the way back to '59 when Ford made their own 4x4's in house.
'59-'77 1/2: Flat frame+spring over axle=tall truck.
'77 1/2-'79: Humped frame+negative arched spring over=low truck.

79 f250 boy; The rear lift blocks on your rig may not be 'factory'. If they do not have the cast in loops to capture the U-bolts, then it is aftermarket. Someone may have already put a 3-4" lift in it.

First from what I've seen and read no F100, F150 OR F350 ever was or will be a "High Boy" This was a F250 thing. (Real question is the first year an F350 was a 4x4)

Ok that said here is some info to back up Aplo23, pics from a 75 F250 Highboy (with a swapped in 76 axle (now why would someone swap in a 76 high boy axle see my article))

Oh, but there was a F-100 'Hi-Boy'
(hee,hee,hee) 1959-1965 F-100 4x4 was on the same leaf spring set-up as the F-250 for those years. 120" WB and flat a$$ frames. A F-100 4x4 of this vintage will ride just as high as a F-250 of the same period. Way Cool.
When Ford introduced the Coil spring front axles in 1966 they lowered the F-100 down to almost the same ride heidth as the 4x2.


As for swapping in a '76 axle into a '75, Disc brakes baby!!!!!!

to put it simply, the only year that this discussion makes any difference for is 1977. 73-76 were all "highboys" 78-79 were all "lowboys." The change was made in mid-1977 so the earlier models where high, the newer models are low. If you are clearing 37" tires on it, I'm going to say someone has already lifted it.

yea...i was refering to the highboy lowboy questions that get covered on there a few times a week.....thats why i come here, to get away from the shit....
ok ill add something useful, 77.5-79 "lowboys" came with a 3 inch block in the rear....if you have anything more than that...someone has put a lift on your truck......not a "factory lift"...theres no such thing. SOme trucks just came higher than others such as the pre 77.5 f-250 compared to the 77.5 and later f-250

i keep getting different answers but can you reasonably run 35's on a hi-boy? i got 33's and would like to run 35' but am not into liftin it.

First off let me say thank you for obviously searching before asking a question. We appreciate that around here.

I can't say for 100% sure what you can fit on a highboy, but I ran 35s on my stock height at the time 78 F250 lowboy, with very minor fender trimming. I'd have to assume 35s would not be any problem at all on your truck. I too have heard lots of rumors, but it seems that it sticks in my head you can run a narrow 38 with proper backspacing & only have to perform minor trimming on the 77 & earlier trucks. Sorry I can't give ya a sold answer, but hope this helps.

1979 ford f250 high or lowboy

My 1977 ford f250 has 5 leafs up front and a divorced transfer case... But the VIN is Y2289x? Is this a lowboy? It's all stock..

unless swapped a divorced case is "hi boy" early 77 was the last year for that. Does it have a 360/390? low pinion open knuckle 44? Large hubs that bolt on with 1/2 inch allen head bolts?

Like a caveman with a computer. Those 2 things never came together. The 351M/400 never came with a divorced case and 77 is the transition year. So either a 400 was swapped into a high boy, or a divorced trans and t-case were swapped into a regular truck.

Take a picture of the frame from inside of the front fender well on the the drivers side and post it here. Thats will help in identifying what it actually is. A pic of the whole truck wouldnt hurt either.
