Question 4.0 Tranny...

Okay so the stock stuff sucks for this tranny right? Not strong enough and is never enough. Although everybody always writes that those same trannies are the only ones that will bolt up to the motor. Well my motor is fine and there really is nothing wrong with it, other then being underpowered. Anyways I figure the tranny will go out before the motor. Is there anyway that could be possible to get something like an NP435 or a AOD to bolt up to this bad boy? I KNOW there are no belhousings made but if I figured out how to make my own is it possible to do? Eventually the motor will get replaced with something like a 5.0 or a 5.8 but until then I would love to find a tranny that I can make work with all of those 4.0, 5.0 or the 5.8. So if anyone says yes that would be good. Its not going to happen anytime soon but I figured I would start the research now.

I used to see this place in VW mags called Transdapt or something like that. They made adaptors to fit just about any trans to any engine.Mostly Vdub stuff. They had a sand rail with an SHO V6 in it .

I know for a fact that Advanced Adapters make a bell housing adapter for the 2.9L so you can put in a real tranny... Check them for the 4.0, they usually have something for everything.

The only advance adapter i know of for the ranger is to put a T5 from a mustang in. Not the best crawling tranny out there.

Actually, they make a bellhousing to put the 435, and the NV4500, and I think the C4 behind the 2.9L. I just found it last week, so maybe it is new??? I don't know, they also make the adapter to mount it to the BW1350.

You can put a c4 behind a 2.9 by using the bellhousing off the c5 that came in the oler rangers. I hadn't heard about the np435 and nv4500 those must be new. Guess i need to send them an email and see what they have to say.

A while back my tranny started acting up and I bought one of the c5 bellhousings and a hurst shifter to swap a c4 in behind my 4.0. It turned out to be wet sensors ( I think) and the problem cleared itself up. But last weekend I overheated the tranny and wasted the front pump seal, so now the trannys puking fluid. Because of that I might still try to do it. I've heard different things about which torque convertor and which flex plate you have to use and you would also have to find an out put shaft or a different transfer case. The linkage would be pretty easy with an aftermarket shifter except for the kickdown, not sure how you would have to hook that up. the ranger station has some information on interchanging trannys that might help you out. Interchanging transmissions
Let me know if you find anything out about the doing the swap, I wouldn't mind doing it this winter.

Well cool, now that I know it can be done I will/might do it. Course if I do, do something like this and have the money I will just toss in a V8 while I am at it. This is all probably years away but I still wanted to know.

Unfortunately you can't put an AOD behind an behind a 4.0. THERE ARE NO ADAPTERS FOR THIS. I know it is possible to mount some older 3 speed Autos behind the 4.0 using some older ranger bellhousings. WHY not consider the MAZDA 5 spd that the rangers and explorers use?? It is a lot stronger and reliable than an A4LD Auto tranny. (and bolt on) I am in the process of putting a 5.0H.O. and AOD in my Explorer right now. The AOD is a must, because it has OVERDRIVE!!!!!!! (good gas mpg's!!)

Heh thats the thing. One of my Explorers has the Auto and the other has the Mazda 5-speed. Neither one do I trust that much. Thats why I wanted to know if was even possible to make my own adapter. From what I have read it is possible however will it be worth it will be the next question.

The 2.8, 2.9, and 4.0 all use the same bolt pattern, and as far as I know, the transmissions are interchangable. Therefore I would think that any thing they sell for the 2.9 should work fine with your 4.0
