I have a 4l. 92 Explorer and it has developed a nasty lifter tap over the last 20,000 miles. It goes away after about 15min. but if you put your ear up to the hood its still there. The truck has 150,000 miles on it but the motor runs very strong so are the valves adjustable?

I don't know about the lifters being adjustable, but I have a '92 4.0 Ranger that developed the same thing this past year. I switched to Premium gas and haven't heard it since. May want to try that...

The 4.0L lifter tap is very common. It is due to lack of oil lubrication. My 91 Exploder 4.0 has 150K on it too. It lightly taps for about 10 minutes on a cold morning too. Just the sign of an aging engine. you might try playing around with different engine oil viscosities to quiet the tapping.
Or, you can swith over to the 5.0 H.O. like I am doing....ha..ha <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
