ok i am looking at buying a '94 f150 with a 4.9L (?) fuel injected inline 6 mated to a 5 speed tranny (don't know which type). anyone had any problems, failures, or any info on these engines? it's sitting on a 4" superlift. again, any problems, failures, or info? this truck looks very clean, rides smooth, and seems to have a lot of power for an inline 6.
thanks for the info.

my friend has a '94 2wd f150 with a 4.9 I-6 5 speed and lifted 4" with 33's running on 4.10 gears. i think it has about 120000 miles on it and it still running strong except for this knocking noise when cold start up but its not bad. the I-6 does have some punch. it can smoke my bronco with a 302 efi, 35's and 4.88 gears

not sure what kind of 5 speed transmission '94 f150s have but the transfer case is a BW1356 with a 2.69:1 low ratio

a friend of mine has a newer, around 94 i guess, F150 with a strait 6 and a 5 speed, it passed 250k a few weeks ago, and is still running strong. come to think of it, he's selling it, it might be the one you're looking at. the major problems i see w/ the engine is that it isnt a V8, it will never be, but if you can live with that it is a great motor, really torquie. also, the six doesnt really get better gas milage than the 5.0, so dont get one expecting to conserve gas.

the I-6 is a great motor...they last a long time. The 5-speed is going the mazda type 5-speed, not the greatest but keep it maintained and it'll prob be alright. The t-case should be BW1356

Jeff don't think it's the same one your friend is selling, this one has 137k ok it.
The guy selling it says that it gets roughly 16 to 18 mpg. around town and on the freeway. If I end up purchasing this truck I am thinking of making it more of a rock truck, will take some work, but one thing I was thinking of was moving the rear azle forwards, relocating the rear fuel cell, and bobbing the bed. I was thinking that moving the rear axle forwards 6" would be enough. Does anyone think that is a bit much, or does it sound about right? And would it be better to just go buy a new driveline or get it shortened? And how hard would it be to go from the twin I beam suspension to a solid, sprung over D44? if you've done anything like this could you post some pics? thanks

Josh, If you're thinking about bobing the bed and moving the rear axle then you might want to think about getting a fullsize Bronco of the same vintage (90's). They came with the same running gear as the F-150's. The wheelbase is at least 8" shorter and the body length is shorter too. It may be cheaper in the long run than messing with the F-150. The gas mileage of the I-6 is about right. My old '84 Bronco with I-6 and Np-435 got 17.5 mpg out on the highway and 14.5 in town. Not bad for a carburator.
Anyway that's my .02 Eric

thanks for the input. But see here is the predicament, I am need of a vehicle this week for transportation to and from school, and sports, and this is the only sensible vehicle that is in good condition. Parent can't drive with new schedual for work. So I was thinking, I have a couple friends with welders and torches, so I could just borrow the welders from them for a few bucks or some lunch. And plus I kinda would want to do the work so I can learn it as I go.
