Post 91 Explorer LX cheap??

I found a 91 explorer lx loaded with 151K and it is in great shape but the motor has a bad valve and posibly a piston gone bad. This info is from the owner. What my question is, they want around $1500 for it but I have never priced out 4.0 v6s, is tis a good price. What I have planed for it would be leave the 4.0 and auto in it and swap in a d44 and 9" out of my old 71 bronco. What do you think? Thanks in advance.

First off check out www.4x4central.com or www.explorerforum.com (Same place). Second, I would dump the 4.0 for a 5.0/aod/D20 combo. The 4.0 is a good motor. The tranny SUCKS ASS! LOL At least that is my opinion. My tranny still has not given way but when it does you have two choices. New tranny or a used one. No one makes a bellhousing to fit the 4.0 for other trannies. Although someday I would like too. The Transfercase is okay, but not slow enough in the rocks. There is an Atlas II out there for em but thats bucks to put behind the stock tranny. The dana 44/9" combo is what a lot of guys are doing right now and the swap pretty much bolts up without to much fab work.

you can put a C4 tranny behind the 4.0 but you lose over drive and yes it works
you need bell housing from 2.8 v6 mustang 76 i think and bolt it to C4 the adapter and tail shaft from C5 off of early ranger or bronco II and run your stock case <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Thanks for the reply! I bought the 91xl today and it is super clean and has every option from leather to a tow pack and looks new inside and out!! I got it for $1,500 and drove it home. The motor needs a valve job but if it is more than that I found a 4.0L with 60k for $650. and that still puts me at only $2150. I have a d44 with arb out of my totaled 71eb and a disk 9" for the rear. I build cages for alot of people and I think I will do an exo-cage just to be diff. Also it will be rolling on 36" tsl's

So Alx. With a 76+- v-6 bell housing that will bolt to a 4.0 then I need the tail housing and out put from a c-5 and that will mate to the stock explorer t-case. If so would'nt I be better off just using the C-5 as a whole instead of the c-4 since bell housing patern is the same?? Thanks for the help this is my first rig newer than 1972.

yep that would be a better way to just use the C5 but the C4 in my opnion is a better tranny
you could also change the bell of the c4 out of an EB with a dana 20 just have to mod the drive shafts
