I am trying to speck out a new motor for a class 8 off road race truck that I am working on.
I want the motor to run a whole season (approx 6, 250 mile races) with out having to tear it down. The reason for this is the race team is new to this class and we need to concentrate on learning how to drive this thing without having to worry about motor failures. This is what I have come up with so far. I want to end up with approx. 450-475 hp. 351w boared .030 steel crank ? steel rods ? Aluminum heads (World products,Sr. Lite heads 2.02 int./1.6ex Approx. 560 lift roller cam 11:1 compression plasma moly rings stock oil pump roller rockers Hooker headers I am kinda inexperienced at "Off road" specs. and I am real inexperienced at ford motors. I am having a problem kinding places that carry forged steel crank shafts. Any info at all would be appreciated. Thanks!

You should be able to buy a motor with the power specs that you are looking for from ford motorsports. try www.fordracing.com/performance
or www.thefordsource.com You might want to consider the venerable 427 Cobra motor.

The stock cast crank is fine the journals are much bigger than a chevy so you rarely hear of a ford breaking a crank. The problem with the larger journal bearings is that they don't handle high RPMs as well more likely to spin a bearing. A 475 horse 351 is nothing new just buy one from ford motorsport or copy someone. Stroker 351's are really popular lately but for a desert truck I would recomend against it.

I on the other hand would HIGHLY recomend a stroked small block. As long as your not getting the pin up into the oil ring area of the piston, and the piston itself still has plenty of skirt area, you arent going to have any problems with accelerated wear. Something like a 396 with a decent set of mildly ported heads should pound out your HP requirements all day long. The aftermarket for small block fords is ENORMOUS thanks to the fox-body mustang (79-93). I'd seriously just go out and pick up a issue of Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords, and do some looking around.. you'll be amazed. So much has changed for us ford guys..

even check on ebay. there's a guy who sells stroker cranks that weren't perfect so they ground them .010 under. thats no big deal. that kind of power(450-475) is no big deal. there are plenty of stroker fords racing in the desert with alot more stroke and power. have been for years. just remember to use good parts and keep it lubricated well and cooled well should last you...

You want 1.35 hp per cubic inch and want to run a stock oil pump! <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">I built a beefy boat motor (1.25hp/cubic inch) that will run 6000 rpms alday long and spent a ton of $$ on the oil system.
I copyed the Nascar oiling system for a 69 Hemi for my 440. Look a Milodon they have some nice stuff and run a huge cooler.

if you wanted to spend a bit more and want to dry sump the motor for the ultimate oiling system. i can help you out. i currently have a killer deal going on used dry sump tanks from a closed down nascar cup team. i have 4 & 5 gallon set ups. with heaters in them, all mounts on them. 125 for the tank. thats a hell of a deal. these are high dollar patterson tanks. email me personally if intrested.
