Post wierd 9" idea I have had a few times over, would it work?

Ok, I like the design of the 9", but have always wanted one in ful floating 8 lug. The idea I have is to use a full width f-150 9" rear, cut off the ends, and weld on dana 70 ends, for 35 spline shafts, then put in a 35 spline center with a spool, some custom shafts, maybe a truss.. and beat on it. Would this work? and how would it hold up to a full size truck on 38.5" sx's to 42" tsl's?? I just like the design, and the eaton rear end is hard to get parts for. Think It woudl work? thanks Garrett

I think it would work, but the ring gear would still be 9 inches. Therefore the strength at the differential itself would be the same but you'd have burlier axles. For the $$ and time I'd get a junkyard 60 and build that. My 9inch has a detroit and 4.56 and now that I look back I could've done a 60 for about the same $ with a spool. <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">

Still only a 9" ring gear that should be plenty when the pinion is supported with two bearings.

Yes that would work just fine. One thing to remember is if you were planing to use the stock Dana axles you will have to find out if the pressure angle of the splines is cut the same as they are on a 9"

From little bits I've picked up off Moser's website, Dana splines do not have the same angle as either GM or Ford splines

I have done this. I used a stock late model 9" housing and put D70 FF spindles on it. Then ran 8 lug disk brakes.

Look at the bottom of my web page for more info.

Yes, that is what I am talking about. Honestly, i havent heard of a 9" pinion breaking, or striping the ring gear. But then, i dunno, I don;t keep up in 9". It just seems like it would hold up, even if I did run 44" Boggers and a 650 hp engine. Plus, I would use some alloy aftermarket shafts. Remember, this is just an idea i have had, but this

Seems really good to me.. lots of ground clearence, the strength not to break (hopefully) and a one piece axle housing design (insted of pressing in tubes). But then again, i don;t know how much torque those R+P's can take. Any oher info?? thanks. Garrett

Hey I know I am a Jeep dude, but I am also building a 9" for it. What convinced me was a web page that you have to see. It compares the 9", 60, 70 and something else. go to www.performanceunlimited.com and look at the Axle compare section. Very informative. By the way like your idea, on the floater. I have set mine up, with 31 spline, 4.86 gears and detroit locker. I run TSL 36'rs, a buddy with the same set-up with 38's. Nothing broken yet. I think there is nothing strong then a 35 spline 9".

a properly built nine inch is way tough. you can also upgrade the gear by putting in a dana 70 gear. this is what many trophy trucks run. so you still have a drop out carrier with the larger gear. this is made by Christman in so cal. they started doing these conversions in the early 90's.
as mentioned before the bearing upgrade is a must on the pinion. another thing to think about is a nodular style carrier.
