'68 460 ?'s
So I know a little about IH stuff but nothin' about Ford (except it's obviously better than anything with a bowtie), but I plan on running a '68 460 in my '24 IH ratrod project.
I have the original C6 bolted to it. I am told it is unique and highly desirable and that many people have their C6 machined to accept this one's parts (or something). I really want a 4 speed (or 5 speed)instead of the auto. Can any of you guys tell me what vehicles or trannys I should be lookin' for. I would gladly trade the C6 for a clutch, bell housing, and tranny. Is this a fair trade? I am looking for speed in a 2WD application not at all what I am used to playing with. I am hoping to find a formula from you guys, something like '68 460+'7? bellhousing+80's mustang tranny = good/cheap 5 speed. Or am I complicating this too much? Thanks for the help, KZ |

Your 68 engine is a good year. Keep the C6 behind it. A C6 is a very tough transmission. A 4x4 manual tranny was never put behind an early 460 according to the manuals. (I'm sure someone on here has one they bought new that way.) Back then the 460 was a luxury engine and it got the luxury transmission. It can be done, but it's expensive. You might be able to sell your C6 for about $150 depending on going rate in your area.

Thanks for the advice but I am not making this thing 4wd.That's most of my problem I'm lost without a transfer case. And I am looking at 2:1 in the stock IH rear end! It is gonna be a low fast jalopy to get me to the Bonneville Saltflats once a year. I am trying to keep it era specific (esxcept for the 460) and they didn't have auto's back in the 20's.
Thanks, KZ |

ZF5 is a popular super tough five speed that you can get from an 87-97 F250/350/superduty with a 460 or 7.3L diesel. Not from a 351.

Thanks for the info!! That is kinda what we were speculating but had to ask. I was offered a Clark 5 speed today. This is the one with granny first and 1:1 5th gear. I think this would be perfect for the 2:1 ring and pinion in the rear end. Do you guys know if it will bolt up to a BB bell housing? If not would it be hard for a carpenter and a machinist to figure out?
Thanks again, KZ |
