3 days ago I got 20 miles per gallon out of my 466 in my 81 F150.I drove a 50 mile trip and used less than 3 gallons of gas the hole way. That was at 2500 RPM at 70 mph.

i wouldnt be too dismissive jersey devil, you can steady state tune a carb to do one thing pretty well, and potentially match or even beat efi in some situations.

though, i would have to say a 460 would want to be a nutless head cracker if it was under load in that scenario.

24 mpg out of regular gasoline pushing more then 3k of just empty truck is quite an accomplishment.

20 mpg with any big block with reg gas is hard to believe. i would love to check these rigs out in controlled conditions.

Well boys to my astonishment I did indeed get almost get 20 MPG with my 460.Its bored .30 over with a comp 270 cam and an eddie 750 carb and intek along with headdman headders.I was doing 70 mph at 2500 rpm almost the hole way.I filled my 5 gallon gas can before i left and used half of it by the time i got to toun,50 miles later.I run 3.50 gears with 34 inch tires, and a 4 speed.

I did do it rather you beleave it or not..Try that with EFI..

PS and with those carb settings it will spin 6000 rpm all day in the mud and spin the 34 inch swampers flat out in the road on pavement with the rearend locked...In other words I DIDNT lean the carb any for this.

mileage claims over 50 miles mean nothing... there is way to much varriance in just how full you get the filler neck..
I would especialy NEVER believe those numbers on a edlebog..

To add some tech,

76' cougar XR-7
2.75 gears
c-6
70' 10-1 429
performer cam, performer intake, edlebog 750 carb(junk, junk, junk), dual 2" exhuast
12mpg.

The problem with fords efi setup, is the drastic varriations between the same motors. the 300 I-6 is a excellent example of this, I've seen a few EFI 4.9's that get 18-20mpg, but i've seen alot more that get 10mpg(and still run DAMN good, ie: nothing wrong with the motor) Where as the 1bbl motors are alwasy 16-20 mpg.

EFI 460's are the same way, too much emphisis went into smogging the motor. With proper twECCing on one, I could esilly see one in the 14-15mpg range.
I also think if you started with some real compression, and a good 600 holley, you could get halfway decent mileage from a 460.
The low compression of the 80's and 90's killed them for mileage.
When the compression goes up, so does the thermal efficiancy.
This is why diesel's get such better mileage, it's from the thermal effiency, not beacuse it's a diesel.
Infact, if you compare the P-V diagrams for a Otto(gas) cycle, and for a diesel cycle, you will see the isentropic period for a Otto cycle is much longer than compared to a equaly sized and equal compression ratio diesel cycle engine.
With that in mind, if you could make a hypothetical 22:1 460, the gas mileage would be astronomical...

Or if you really want to get mileage, you can play with the cam timing, to mimic a atkinson cycle engine, like used the prius, and excpae hybrid engines, to maximize effiency over a very short rpm range. or pressurecharge it(miller cycle) to even more so maximize this effect.

Back when I DD'd my 460 pig, average was 14 back and forth to work(mostly highway, 55 mph criuse...) On the highway, I'd manage to squeak 16 out of it if I drove a steady 55 and took it easy. One tank of fuel when I was in college, right about the time the stock holley carb completly shit the bed, I dipped below the 1 mpg mark, but, I was being your typical 18 year old and rodding the living shit out of it... LOL
Put it in low range, and it hits the low single digits, without even looking at the gas pedal... LOL

the hi comp 460 would need diesel to run.

lol well i have an 81 f-250 with a 400m my rig weighs about 5700 with 35's and can do the 1/4 mile in 15 seconds, but i only get like 3-5 miles in city and about 4-6 on highway, for some reason the peddle cant stay under 3/4 throttle, or under the speed limit, maybe my foot is broken or the peddle is not sure. i have a d60 4:10, 4x4, t-18, rebuilt w/750 holley turned into a Qjet, edlecock intake manifold, 3" 10 series flow, mild rv cam, , and aluminum 351 cleavland heads, and maybe like a 560/560 cam soon i dont know.

ya, i got a trick when i am driving. I also drive like grandpa, and don't slam the pedal to the floor. if i stomp it i can suck it down to 8 no problem. I also do mostly highway driving, so that makes a big difference as well.
