I have 78/79 Bronco axles under my Toyota. The rear is a 9", and it doesn't have a drain plug (but it has a fill plug). I had the gears and locker done, and now need to change the fluid. How are the 3rd member studs set in the housing? Are they threaded in, pressed in, or welded? I'm thinking I need to pop one of the lower studs out and replace it with a bolt that can be removed easily to drain the oil. Or, is it better to drill/tap/plug the bottom of the housing? Anyone got pics of what they did?
those studs should be pressed in from inside the housing. just like wheel studs. you can remove everything(carrier, axles, fluid) clean it all up and weld a 1/4 or 3/8 plate to the bottom and drill/tall for a flush mount pipe plug...I'm gonna do mine here soon.If not just pull the shafts and pop the carrier out some-that will get most of it out,Chuck
Once the 3rd is out, beat the lowest stud out (press fit) weld a nut the back side, and thread a bolt in to hold it. That way, next time you can just remove the bolt to drain it.
Thanks guys. I thought I'd have to take the 3rd off regardless, just didn't want to if I could avoid it. What a pain in the ass. So I guess while I have it apart I'll do a drain plug mod. Thanks again.
