I need to remove the differential in my 8.8 to replace the tone ring and reinstall, and it shouldn't need any shim readjustment since Im not regearing.
(After I remove the c-clips and slide the axleshafts out)
So I apply the yellow paste to make sure I have a good contact pattern, if so , then remove main bolt caps, and punch to indicate position for reinstall.

So whats the best way to remove the differential without disturbing the shims?

the shims are on the out side of the race - so mark your caps and remove them - and keep an eye on the shims - make shure they go back on the right sides and then reinstall when done - no need to check pattern - or back lash ( but if it makes you feel better, then check the back lash before and then after - the numbers should stay the same )
