I"m helping my friend with a 88 bronco with a 351. the problem is that the starter will engage while driving down the road. wich reallllly sucks. first thing was a new starter relay....no avail. someone told him the ingnition so he replaced that switch also. I told him to start the truck then pull the wire off the small wire of the relay which is the one that engages it. and he drove it around and still doing it. wtf?? how can the starter be doing this when its not getting any signals. the starter is also about the 3rd one. it keeps messing them up bad. another thing that just recently happened is the neg on the battery got verryyyy hot and melted itself off. I"m confused and was wondering if someone could give a little imput or direction. thanks
this problem happened and the selinod was the first thing i replaced but if this problem is a very very common problem with these rigs then i guess i could have great luck and had a bad one to start with as well as the new one being bad... how about the neg wire melting the lead right of the terminal was that a freak thing or is there an explanation of this through the selinod? thanks guys
if your talking about the lead on the sol. then its a bad sol, or your ingnition is sticking bad. I had alot of starter probems with my old 75 (some same as you describe) and replace the starter (without solenoid on the bendix) , new sol. new ingition switch.. then it all went away. (bixest problem was the bendix)
You have to have a short somewhere. I've melted the last 2 starter solenoids I've put in the bronco, and all I can figure is cheapy starter solenoids don't hold up to starter crawling, and the contacts weld shut.
But to melt the negative poll that, battery must have been damn hot. Make sure all connections are tight and all grounds are clean. If it does it again there has to be a short.
