I got my hands on a 77 f250 with a full floating rear 60, and a hp60 up front too. The truck has 44"s on it right now, and as far as i know the axles are all stock, so it's going to need beefed up. Does anyone make chromoly shafts for the 60 rear?
Is the carrier in the rear the same as the one in front? also, i got to get lockers for it, and it has 4.56s in it now, if i keep the same gears i'm told i need to get a 4.10 and lower carrier for the front, and the rear would be a 4.56 and up. that sound right?

Yes you can get 35 spline chromoly shafts, but they will probably have to drill your spindles to get them to fit. You are probably better buiying a junkyard D70 or 14bolt that already has 35 spline shafts.
In any case, if i went with a junkyard 70, how easy would the swap be? Are the spring mating surfaces the same? I tried looking up info on them but havent found much, i know i'd need a srw one, but ford, chevy, dodge, will they all work, or is there a particular one i need to look out for?
in all honesty, if your looking for an easy swap, id probably just put a sterling in there.. it's 100% bolt in, 35 spline, good aftermarket, and you can find them almost as easy as a 14 bolt, and they don't bring near the price that a 70 does..
I dunno, the more i think about it, i really dont want to go through all the hassle of swapping a rear end out.
I think what i'm going to do is ditch the 44s that are on it, throw some 39.5 boggers on, and do whatever i got to do to beef the rear 60 up. You seriously think i'll have to bore the spindles to accept a 35 spline shaft? If need be thats no big deal, my uncle is a machinist and would do it for free.
i run a 60 rear with stock shafts and have broken the passanger side about 4 times, running 39's and a very very healthy 351,in my EB, i have now put all the running gear into a toyota, i just get shafts from the jy, i will go 35spline d60 before i put the 14bolt boat anchor under there. plus i allready have the gears just need to get a spool to make the jump to 35spline.
i say truss the 60 you have because it is only a 1/2ton axle get a spool and some gears and shafts and your just as strong as a 14bolt and have much better clearence...
