I am going to swap out the TTB in my 97 Ford F-250 for a Dana 60 with king pins. Pretty straight forward swap, I dont forsee any problems.
My question is can I take the drivers side top bearing cap off the knuckle and swap it out with one from a 78 79 dana 60 that has the arm for steering linkage. Then rotate my pitman arm on the steering box 90 degrees so the end result is similar to the old style steering.
Oh yes, I already searched, but couldn't find the answer
He didnt say anything about the track bar. What he is saying is to use the steering linkage (drag link/tierod) off of a newer 60 (86-97), instead of screwing around trying to make the junk from the 78-79 work. Also from what Ive seen, you would only want to eliminate the track bar if you do a shackle reversal.
The trac bar is there because of the stupid front shackles, not the steering. either live with it, or do a shackle reversal, don't bastardize your steering for no good reason.
the modern steering is infinately better than the old push pull crap... leave that for the chevy guys.
and you don't NEED a track bar on there, it just makes it a bit better handeling.
And it has nothing to do with the shackles.. heeps, scouts, and yotas have the shackles up front, with crossover, and no trackbar.
It has everything to do with Ford's stupid A-frame excuse for shackles. Just bad bushings on the track bar will make an 86-97 F350 wander all over the place, or even cause death wobble, the front shackles have no real side to side stability, as they were designed for TTB, not a normal leaf sprung steup.
It is a straightfoward swap providing your D60 is from the 80's/early 90's. If it's a 78-79 D60, you're going to have crossmember clearance issues and spring pad location issues.
IIRC he will need a 85.5 to 91 D60 to have a kingpin D60, before 85.5, the f-350 4x4 had the ttb
