Hey, How hard would it be to swap an auto out of a 1990 Bronco ( c4?) into the same body style that has a 5 speed? I have no experience in the tranny dept, and I'm looking at swapping the handshaker(not a huge manual fan) for a C4 I have laying in the garage.
What all would go into this kind of conversion? Thanks guys
cross members are probably different, driveshafts lengths need to be changed, i dont think your tcase will bolt to the c4 due to different spine counts, so you might need a new tcase as well. IMHO just fix the AOD thats in the bronco and save yourself the headache..
Because in the first post he said he had a c4 sitting in his garage. Why spend money on an AOD if you have something that will work? There's nothing wrong with a c4 unless you're looking for something with overdrive.
He may end up spending more money to get the c4 to work than he would have into getting an AOD though.
the c4 is definitly stronger and would be the better choice vs a stock AOD but then again it depends what hes doing with the bronco, crawler? DD? Im actually building a 4r70w out of an explorer for the overdrive and the lower 1st gear ratio (2.84 vs c4`s 2.46). If he did go the c4 route he would have to get a d20 tcase or an adapter to hook it up to another tcase, also new dshaft, cross members fabricated and some other little shit. But your right he does have it laying around..
I have a wrecked bronco with the auto and drivetrain and everything. So its not like Im gonna go buy a t case and such, I just want to swap from the wrecker into the nice one so I can have the nice one an Auto, cuz like I said. Not a manual fan
Yea its an AOD. In 95 they changed over to the AODE-W. I know you said you dont wanna buy a tcase but you can bolt a 205 directly to the AOD with a little grinding on the adapter to clear the shift rail for the tcase. Good luck :smokin:
what about lines and stuff? I plan on putting like a hurst or BM floor shifter in to deal with that part and sorta cover the spot left from pulling the stick out.
Need to route your oil lines obviously to either an auto radiator or an external cooler, and also route in the harness on the trans. Id swap over the computer if you have it as well. Other then that its not much
AOD doesn't require a computer, but a E4OD which would also be in the same era bronco would. Or just put a 4 speed or ZF in it..
