I apologize for the cloudy pictures.....somebody stole my digital camera so im stuck using the cell phone
from the sounds of his post.... i dont think he cares much about looks. He just wants a rig to go out and beat the snot out of. I think its pretty gnarly. I am biased to explorers though.... and i'll be running the same wheel/tire combo he has.
which leads me to my question.... my 36's arent mounted right now and it is a joke that they say 36 because i think they only measure 33. Do they expand alot when mounted and inflated? and BTW my tires are 4 ply. pretty light and i'm sure they will flex pretty alright.
Yeah I am waiting until i have the resources to start my cage before i cut the top. I dont have access to a shop right now so im just making due with what I got.
I dont give 2 shits about how it looks. I just wanted to be able to run the hard trails on a limited budget.
This isnt my first rodeo, I have also built 3 cherokees, a cj7, a toyota pickup, and a cj5. Im still in college so im working with an ever tightening budget and limited resources right now.
The fenders fit but i would have had to cut them WAY out to make it function. I saved myself the work and just pulled them off and herculined the inner fenders.
The 36" goodyears measure about 35.5 aired up with 75% tread. They are small with no air in them. Theyre just a smidge bigger than my roommates 35" coopers aired up. I have access to a grooving iron so i will be doing alot of cutting on them to get more leading edges.
the explorer does look pretty bad ass with the roof over the hatch area cut off. What part of arkansas is fayetville in? my grandparents live in northeastern near cave city and i'm going to try and get my truck down there next time we visit.
Explorer $500
Pulled doors $free$
Pulled glass $free$
Spring over $free$
5.5" front lift $50$
H1 wheels and tires $450
= ~ $1000
STAGE 2
*im going over budget*
I came into a REALLY good deal on some tube and the plan as of right now is to back half the explorer with tube and swap in a solid front axle.
I did this last night (sorry about the dark picture)
I dunno, it takes me about 30 minutes to drop a TTB frontend down to the ground (2 pivot bolts, 2 RA nuts, 2 shock nuts, two swaybar bolts, + popping the TRE off the pitman arm), and maybe another 20-25 mins to grind off the rivets and knock the brackets off with a sledge...
Anyway, I won't continue cluttering up the post. It's cool just to see another RBV build happenin' :smokin: .
I unbolted all of mine..Radius arms and all..3hrs..boxed it all to get shipped out..oh..class 2..so tranny member and all..yall take too long..:grinpimp:
more progress. I dont know if i like this piece thats why its just laying up there. Trial and error with my first attempt at anything with tube. I get more and more excited with every piece i add to it though because its looking more and more like a buggy.
G-ACK!!..holy long radius bends batman!!..find someone that bends racecar chassies and have him get ya some nice tight bends in that stuff!!..probably wont deform as badly WHEN ya use it...
1. Because i got a good deal on it
2. Its already in my posession....why sell it and start over with another vehicle?
3. Cutting sheet metal is 90% of the fun :homer:
Its part coil spacers, part body lift. It works just fine....however Its all coming out in favor of a 4 lnked hp44
