F350 Desireable axles for 4X4

BillaVista's list of desireables goes:

1978-79 F-350 and some F-250 (Snofighter and High GVW packages)
1986-88 F-350 with dual rear wheels (DRW)
1988-91.5 F-350 with single rear wheels (SRW)

My question is: Why are 1986-87 F350 SRWs not desireable as IMPLIED? What's the difference between DRW and SRW for these years?

TIA,
Art

Maybe the 86-87 axle had ball joints, tapered axles, smaller ring gear, etc. ?

As for the differences, I'd say one axle was used in 4x4s with single rear wheel applications whereas the other was utilized in 4x4s duallies. Oh yeah, don't forget differences in WMS too.

Actually, IIRC... Those axles in srw form should have been TTB...?? Could be wrong.

So they were Dana 50s? But we're talking F350s.

Found a TTB F-350 at the pick n pull about 6 months ago and I was heart broken to find the TTB front end under it.

80-85.5 was ttb on f350 I believe.

I don't have an answer on the 86-87 though.

1986 (august 1985 and on) was the reintroduction of the king pin HP dana 60. From the last dozen f350's that ive parted out, the only difference you will notice is between the ball joint and king pin models as well as the differences in pinion offset compared to the 78-79 models. So to clarify, 1986 and 1987 have DANA 60. If you need proof, I think I still have images from the 86 quad I had, and 3 1987 quads. Nothing puts a smile on an ol' Dodge owners face quite like a parted out Ford 350...

Mike, please do me a favor. Would you get a measurement of the distance of the centerline of the pinion to the inner surface of the brake rotor. I'm trying to determine which (a 78-79 or 86-91 axle) would line up better with the transfer case that's already installed in my custom monster van.

Thanks in advance.

You are correct. The f350 ttb cut off, was late or mid 85...

I stand corrected.

All 85 D60's were dually. 86-92 you could get a sinlgle wheel. When I got mine it had the dually bolt on hubs. They just unbolt. I havn't personally seen a 85-92 F350 TTB, but no doubt could be out there.

1980-85 F350 was Dana 50 TTB. 1986+ was back to D60s. of course there are always those freak cases where left over axles were put under trucks built at the begining of the new year and such
