Superduty axles

I have an 01 Excursion an am woundering what Superdutys came with a D60 axle I could swap in. My understanding is any F-350. Or could I get an older Ford D60 and swap the outers so I can Keep the 8 on 170 bolt pattern. Thanks

Yes all F350 Superdutys have Dana 60s in the front end, at least thats what ive heard as well.

What are you doing in an 01 Excursion that the stock Dana 50 isnt strong enough for?

I would like to put a locker in it. I am planning to take the family on a few trips into the mountains, and would like the security of a locker and winch just in case (that 10%). I also plan on keeping this one until fossil fuel is an allternative fuel.

Not all F350 Super Duties got the D60. All the DRW SD F350's got them. Some of the SRW did some did not. IIRC The older ball joint D60 is narrower than a SD D60.
Why don't you just install a locker into your D50? The ECTED, ARB, and Lock Rite are available for it.

The inner shafts are smaller on the 50 though, and could become a weak spot with a locker (what size tires are on it?).

Any '02-'04 F-250 or 350 has the axle you want ('99-'01 SRW were all 50s).

4x4junkie is correct the inner splines do neck down, but from there on out it is the same as a SD D60. For mild to moderate wheeling and tires 37" on down I would say it is still a strong axle IMO. The two selectable lockers I mentioned will go a long way to alleviating stress on the shafts when unlocked during high traction turns.

the weakest part of thge axle is what determins it's strength.

big u-joints, small case, small gears, small inners, small outers, small (for it's weight) unit bearings

The u-joints are big the same as a Dana 60, Same case and axle tubes as a Dana 60, Gears are bigger than a Dana 44 but smaller than a Dana 60 (what else would you expect), Inner axle only neck down at the splines outboard of that it is the same size as a Dana 60, outer axles are the same as Dana 60, Unit bearings are the same as a Dana 60
There is a lot of misinformation abut this axle especially on this site. If you don't believe what I am saying look up the part numbers for yourself.

I've got 10-12 brand new/unused D60's, 2003 models, for Super Duty/Excursions. Price varying on what all you need. You can use the rotors/calipers from your existing D50. FF3Pm is correct in what he says..there is alot of misinformation floating around about these axles. Drop me a PM if you're interested. I'm located in Indiana, right next to I-64 at an exit ramp.

My tires are metric, but I think about 32" or 33". My wheeling will be moderate to light. If I have the fam with me I just want to be ready for the worst. I don't want to be stuck in the middle of no where. Mostly just going some where a standard car could not.

You'll probably be fine with a locker in your 50 then.

you should be fine - with only 32 - 33 you will loose a unit bearing before you break anything - i have a ttb 50 in my 95 f250 and i beat it with 35" toyo muds and i havent killed it yet - i have kept up on the maint. like new joints when they show any ware and good oem stuff - not vatozone -

i wouldnt worry intill you get in the 35 and up with hard wheelin - like big rocks and the stupid petal
