Does it have an overdrive switch on the dash and a P-R-N-D-2-1 pattern? Then its an E40D.
No switch and a P-R-N-OD-D-1 pattern and its an AOD. Ive never seen a bronco with a C6 up close, but id imagine the shift pattern would be P-R-N-D-2-1, as it has no overdrive. Id replace whatever it has with a C6 personally. The AOD's are garbage and the early E40D's are not much better. If its got an AOD, the C6 is pretty much bolt in. Its an inch or two shorter, so driveshafts may have to be modified. Ive seen the E4OD replaced with a C6 before, but id imagine its a pita wiring wise. Look up a vin decoder. You can decode the tag on the door and identify the trans. Also there are sites that illustrate the difference in the trans pan.

Ya i found that out. The AOD tranny only has 14 bolts on the oil pan and the E4OD has 20 bolts. So i have an AOD tranny in my truck. I got one lined up for now its coming out of an 86 the guy only wants $100 and says its still in his truck so i can test drive it before he pulls it.
Other then checking the fluid and making sure it dont smell burnt and no sliping in any of the gears what else should i look for while inspecting this tranny? I know these AOD trannys are known for having problems. |

So the guy back out of the deal on the AOD tranny.. Can any body tell me for sure the size difference in the C6 VS the AOD, and how much would it cost to get a mod done to my drive lines..
