2003 F250 with the Deezul What Front Axle ??

Originally I posted this in the general 4x4 section. But I am thinking you Ford specific guys may have better info.

What front axle would have come in this 03 F250 Deezul ?

Most folks are saying a HP60 but there is some suggestion that it might be a D50.

Called Dana as the on line BOM`s only go up to 2002. The service rep was`nt much help as his catalog is the same as the on line one, 2002 and lower.

So, If it is a 50 would it be a HP ? Have the thick axle tubes ?

OK Ford guys, what do you think it is going to be ?

In ether case I`ll buy it for the C`s and Knuckles. But it sure would be nice for it to be a 60.

The pinion nuts the easiest way to tell. D50 will be 1 1/8" and D60 is 1 5/16 IIRC.

Its a Dana 60 because its a solid axle, they stoped putting the dana 50's in the F250's in 97. The dana 50 was the twin I Beam set up that didnt hold up well in the diesel.

Found this for a 2003 F250/350 frt. axle

Super Duty
Series/Model F-250-350 SRW F-350 DRW F-450-550
Make Dana Dana Dana
Max. Rating @ Ground (lbs.) 5200 5200 6000
Type Monobeam, Live Spindle
Drive Hotchkiss
Housing — Type Unitized
— Cover Attachment Bolted
Wheel Bearings — Type Tapered Roller
Gears — Type Hypoid

Ring Gear — Pitch Diameter (in.) 9.00 9.75

Pinion — Mounting Above Center
Differential — Type 2-Pinion
— Bearings Tapered Roller
Axle Shaft — Minimum Diameter (in.) 1.59
— Diameter over Splines (in.) 1.30
— No. of Splines (Hub End) 30

So if I read this correctly the F250/F350 SRW have the 9.00 ring gear. Which would make it a D50.............

Well it seems the only way to be sure is to take a good look at the donor truck when I see it on Monday. See if the chunk is stamped or run the BOM with Dana.
Ether way its coming home. 50 or I hope a 60.

If your looking to lock it up when I was looking for my locker I was told that the only locker they make for the 50 is a ARB just a heads up on that

You are correct. Called ARB and talked with the tech guy. We even discussed trying to install 35 spline spiders to a 30 spline. Won`t work as there is`nt enough room.

Still though. With the larger gears and 1 ton outers it would be an upgrade over the 44 I have now. Sure I`ll have to get axles and spindles etc to change the bolt pattern but hey it is a step forward. Mine for 125 bucks so I can`t go wrong.

But if it is a 60 then dammmm.

not true. Ford used the solid dana 50 in the super duties in the early 2000 models

Fail, every 3/4 ton superduty had a D50 in it before they began to get phased out in 2001 IIRC. Pretty sure all excursions had 50's in them too, but the later ones might be 60's.

Either way, a 2003 should have a 60 in it, I doubt there would be an 50's left that late in the switch

I had a 2005 (last year) Excursion front end apart a few weeks ago and it was a dana 50, I don't think it was a TTB either

I've also been told you can measure the distance from the pinion face to the rear face of the center section. 13.5" = Dana 60, 12.5" = Dana 50. FWIW, my 2001 F350 SRW has a Dana 50. I was told sometime in mid 2001 they switched to the 60's and everything after that had a 60, but I've also talked to guys who got a 50 on their 2002. If it's an 03 I think you're good to go.

Supposedly all DRW had 60's up front. All SRW trucks (250's and 350's) had dana 50's up till 2001. In 2002 the change happened along the way and both were used dependingg where truck was made. 2003 and up all got dana 60's.

This is not true.
Just one quick look at Randy's R&P lists ECTED, ARB, Lockrite, and a Powr-Lok are available for he 50. Albeit a Powr-Lok is a limited slip it is a very good and strong limited slip.

all DRW super dutys (99 to present) came with dana 60's

all f250's 99- mid 02 came with dana 50's (although a few dana 60's slipped into a few trucks)

mid 02 to present came with dana 60's

the 99-04 dana 60's were 35 spline inner/30 spline outer.

05+ dana 60's were 35 spline inner/outer
