1961 ford f350 dually 4x4 project
Hey I'm new to the forums but I'm in the process of making an off road mud eating truck out of my 1961 Ford f350 dually 292 y block 4 speed. I plan to make it for every purpose rock crawling, trails, snow, mud, and highway... I'm only 15 and its a good projectbut it hasn't moved or ran in 36 years. I got it for free. I got the engine unfrozen. I plan to convert it to four wheel drive. I got a free Dana 60 from a pick and salvagenow I just need to get a transfer case and shaft. Is there any transfer case u guys recommend? I want to do a diesel swap later in the years, but that 292 y block is awesome. im going to do a flatbed.. YouTube - 1961 ford f350 dually pt2..

I tried once, so now you can have fun. You basically just got dropped into the general population at prison. I would suggest you start using spell check and proper grammar and your life here on pirate will be much easier. Most people won't respond, or will respond with constant flaming if your post looks like it was written by a two year old.

The "easy" way would be to use a divorced 205 transfer case with a custom cross member. That way you don't have to fool around with swapping transmissions. When you do your diesel swap you should look for a complete setup: engine+trans+tcase. Or you could just swap the diesel in now and forgo the 292 to save you some work?

A 73-77.5 Ford F-250 High Boy truck will have a divorced 205. If you can find one complete, and steal the front axle, transfer case, front springs and all out of it, you'll be much better off in the long run. Hell, find one with a trashed body, and buy the whole truck at scrap price, you'll be happy you did when you need that one last piece to finish the truck.

I wouldn't do anything with that y-block, I love those motors just because of their cool factor but they are pretty strung out and expensive when they get past the 400hp range. Find a good cheap 460 and swap it in there or just do the diesel swap now. I wouldn't throw money at a motor you arn't going to use.

you have the big opening front fenders, DONT get rid of them, they are not too common, and will allow larger tires in the future without hacking the fronts. The F-250 4x4 from as far as I can tell has the same frame and definatly the same cab. this is true for 1961-1966. the T-case from those years are a divorced style, Dana/Spice model 24. good/strong case and since no one wants them, might be even cheaper than a NP-205. but you should be able to use a NP-205 also without any problems. the Dana 24 was used thru 1972. the Np-205 from '73-77 1/2 in divorced. The cross member that the t-case bolts up to via adaptor plates may even already be bolted into the frame.
That bed might be good for someones Expedition Vehicle. fully enclosed bed with windows, very cool. but looks heavy has hell. A D-44 or D-60 thru 1979 might have the same spring center-center distance. will make bolting in easier. should be good from 1961-1966 at least.

I used to own a '65 and a '66 F-250 4x4. in those years, they shared ALOT of the same stuff from the F-350. Same style of motor mounts (nose cradle/two ears on the bell housing w/tranny hanging in the air), same cab with battery in the floor and steering gear/colum. Can also look at f-100 4x4 from 1961-1965. Do not look at a 1966 f-100 4x4. they are coil sprung and no longer used the 120 inch wheel base frames. the cabs used for 1966 f100 was the 4x2 set up. why the F250 still used the F350 frame in '66?? dunno, last swan song before everything standerdized in 1967 I suppose. But the f-250 4x4 was still unigue in frame width thru 1977 1/2 when the lower front ends went into production.

Damn... That is an UGLY Truck. I LIKE it. reminds me of me.
![]() Like someone here has already said, buy a junker 73-77.5 F250 4x4 for use as the donor. You will get 99% of the running gear you will need, and a lot of optional parts that will make life better (easier), like misc. wiring, nuts and bolts, the little crap that adds up and you won't have to source elsewhere. Good luck, and don't give up on 'er.

Not trying to swindle anyone out of there parts Im wanting to do a resto mod on my 66 short bed. I really want a set of those front fenders. I just figured if hes going to dent it up he might just make some extra money on the fenders and trim up a set of half ton fenders. Good luck on the build btw itll make for a sweet truck.
