I did a diesel conversion on my truck, and need the best radaitor that can easily fit in the space. I moved the stock radaitor about 1.5 inches back to help fit the oil cooler and tranny cooler up front, and have about 3/4 inch between the fan and the back of the radiator.
I do not want to do a ton of fabricating, but if there is no other option I will. So what have you all used successfully in the past?
My 75 has a 79 grille, I cut the plastic down from the backside to make room for the intercooler, then I thinned out the verticle support for the hood latch, and put the condenser in, I didn't have room for the big, new, camperspecial radiator I bought and had the inlet/outlet swapped for the cummins, so I am running an 89 dodge diesel radiator. The trans cooler is under the bed with an electric fan on a temp switch.
Hope this helps.
I installed a 6.2 detroit for it's light weight, and have it mounted pretty low and far back in the truck.
Thanks projectjunkie, so the camper special radaitor for a 75 ford would not fit w the cummins? was it due to thickness? I am looking at the larger 4 core radaitor that I see listed, and also the dual row 1.25 tube griffin radaitor.
I have a stack of old corroded out radiators from the south florida saltwater climate and am worride that the aluminum griffin will not last.
Update: I ordered the two 1.25 tube griffin, we will see how that works out for me.
Well, the cummins is a long engine, I could have pushed it back further, but that would have caused other problems with drivelines, tcase, fuel tank, etc. The old ford radiators have large brackets that push the core away from the core support, and the core is thick. So I had to go with a thinner radiator in my application.
I got the rad installed, I put a small hole in it, but that's par for me, what can you do.
It runs nice and cool, maybe a little too cool, gotta check the thermostat now, and build a shroud. The old rad was pretty bad, a new stock rad might have been fine but I did not wand to buy it and have in not work out.
A pic for those of you who don't like the reading.
