Cross posting this....cause its that damn important
This is probably a stupid question for most Ford guys, but I will ask it anyway, as I have tech inspection in less than 20 hours..
I have a 90 5.0L out of a mustang, a C4 trans, and the flexplate with the big 50oz weight... what starter do I use??
I got a starter for a mustang with an AOD, and an EB with a C4, niether will engage the flexplate, its like the flexplate is 1/2" to small in diameter...
the 164 tooth flex wont fit in a 157 bell, so, you have a 164 bell with a 157 flex, i would pull the flex out and just put the 164 tooth in, then the aod starter or any auto trans starter for sbf should work.. or alteast that is what the mental rolodex is telling me..
So, I pulled the welded starter out, and sat it next to the AOD starter, and I don't see how swapping the noses will help me. The nose of the early starter is definatly bigger, but it won't offset me in any... just make the starter longer, which won't engage the flexplate any better...
A. 2.8 starter is on the wrong side of the motor.
B. 2.8 flexplate is even smaller than the 157 tooth.
