So something in my driveline is makin a funny noise. It made i think a similar noise before and then the u joint on the rear axle yoke blew up. i think that was because i hit it on a rock though. i put a new u joint in, heavy duty, and 2 months later the sound is back. could it be the carrier bearing too? i have around 6 inches of lift. not really sure how much. neither pinion angle is very bad and i dont wheel that much. the noise sounds like like scraping spinning metal and only happens at higher torque, especially in 2nd ,3rd, 4th gear. if i baby it it doesnt make the sound. advice?
Check to make sure the driveshaft is not rubbing on the gas tank skid. The stock diff is offset to clear this, if your 9" doesn't have the same offset then you might have issues.
yep, u joint is my guess. I had the same thing happen in my 75 highboy. The higher the RPMs the worse the vibration and noise. My ujoint was in the short shaft connected from the tranny to transfercase, so i could feel the vibrations in the shifter. If you cant feel the vibrations then its probably on your rearend driveshaft.
I've heard the metal scraping spinning sound from the carrier bearing bracket rubbing on super dutys I've lifted. Some times the angle is too steep. We just lowered the carrier bearing more.
alright thanks for the help. Im getting a 1 piece driveshaft from a 98+ this weekend hopefully so that will get rid of the carrier and then i can put the u joint back in. ill spin it 90 degrees too so i can see if its the pinion end or driveshaft end. should i try to make a new crossmember of some sort that goes around the new driveshaft? or is that crossmember not very important structurally?
Just in case anyone was wondering/ had this problem also, Its toe U joints. the combination of a bad pinion angle (because of the 2 piece driveshaft) and not greasing the joints enough led to all the needle bearings disenegrating. 1 piece drive shaft, thoroughly greased bearings, and im rollin quiet as a mouse. ish
