tring to beef up a 9 in

Iv got a 78 bronco on 44 boggers and I'm want to beef up the rear without replacing it. Iv lookd at sum stuff and talkd to sum people bout puting a 40 spline miny spool and axel. Is that all I would need?

A minispool would not be beefing it up. Full spool or locker, and I don't know if you need to go to 40 spline- 35 ought to be plenty. You'll want to upgrade the pinion support and yoke as well, and if you have a stock case, you want to upgrade that too. You may want to get 3" tubes and a truss as well. No clue what you want this axle to handle, so it's hard to tell what you "need". This is not a simple cheap thing to do if you haven't gotten that point yet.

Can I ask why you ruled out replacing it with a stronger axle? Replacing it could actually end up being cheaper, and you can end up with a stronger axle. With 44's you're housing is going to flex, so have it trussed. Then you need a nodular center, some sort of carrier whether it's a locker or spool, then you would need axle shafts. It seems like you may be making it harder for yourself by wanting to keep the 9".

Well I'm trin to not spend a ton of money that's whatim trin to fiiguer out is if that would b a easx fix without changing the axel. I'm nout puting much hp to it just have low gears. Iv got one ton axels to put under it. I just like the way its setup now and I hate to lose all that. That's y I wuz askn if it wuz easer to do that.

If you aleready have the one tons i think it would probably end up costing less in the long run to build them up enough to handle the 44's since they are aleready way stronger than the 9 inch from the get go.

I totally agree. I wish I did this from the begining with my truck. Instead I wasted money building smaller axles, just to build and swap in tons anyway. Go for the one tons from the get go and don't look back. Trust us when we say it will be the cheaper route to take.

It won't sell for much, they're a dime a dozen. Try some car sites (not 4X4), those guys always want to replace their 8.8, 10 bolt, etc with a 9".

get a 10.25 to put in the rear. they can be had for free to 200.00. they have 1.5" shafts and are full float, which to me is needed with a tire that big. by the time you get 35 spline axles and a spool / locker and a case to put them in you will get over 800 -1000 easy.

you can get a 10.25, gears, weld the diff and some new 8 lug 15" wheels ( assuming you are running a 15" wheel ) for less than beefing the 9".

x2. been there, done that. i did the whole build a 9" thing. buy a 10.25 or find a free one. that big of a tire is a waist of time on a 9"

If you used a 35 spline spool that fits in the stock case and a set of 35 spline axles you can do it for just over 500$. The stock case will probably not live with your tire size and that will add another 250$ or so plus the better pinion support. Pretty easy to spend 1000$ or more.

10.25, 14 bolt or dana 70 would all be better choices and cheaper, plus they will match up with a front 60.
