Prob should put this in newb section but its Tuesday so I'm safe
![]() Before prime wheeling season hits I'm gonna attempt to install my first set of gears in the old 60's. Shouldn't be too bad with some help from a buddy who is semi-knowledgeable in installing them. My only question is this, when buying the gear sets, (its a reverse cut standard 79 ford 60), do I need to buy the think gear set for the front and standard thin for the back or do both need to be thick? I read the bible, and went back this morning and skimmed through it to see what it requires but I couldn't find my answer, I prob just missed it, didn't have time to look at every word on both pages. I know the front needs the thick set but what about the back? Spiders are welded front and rear so I dont have to worry about buying lockers down the road and getting screwed up with the wrong locker for the type of gears I have. I wanna run 5.13's also and want to make sure I can without changing carriers, from what I got from the bible, I dont have to. |

To do it without changing carriers you'll be needing thick for front and rear, assuming your current ratio is 4.10 or less, provided that you can get standard rotation thicks in 5.13, you may have to change carriers if there is no availability.

Yes you have to run thick gears for both unless the carrier is for 4:56 and up but if it's a stock carrier it won't be and it will be 4:10 and down. That is the carrier break for these axles. The difference of offset between the two carriers is 3/16. I know thus from tech from randys ring and pinion. So with that said there "is" a possibility to run a thin regular gear with a ring gear spacer. I think trans dapt sells one but alot will advise it's not ideal but if you torque the crap out if the ring gear bolts with red lock tite it should be fine. I am curious if anyone has had a real world failure not I heard once my brothers uncles friend kinda crap if there was a failure do to a spacer...

It's nit beneficial to run a spacer it's just a solution if you have a 5:13 thin gear and again nit always the best solution. 5:13 thick gears are NOT hard to find either . Go to randys ring and pinion and it has a "T" in front of the part # for thick. There's a few brands available.
