8.8 Lockrite install problems

Im building a 97 Explorer 8.8 for my Bronco2 right now. About 2-3 years ago I bought a "new" 31 spline Lockrite for a 8.8 from somebody off another site. Well today when I was installing it I found that the outer gears that go into the open carrier first do not fit tight inside the hole in the carrier where the axles slide thru. The collar that goes inside the carrier with the shim on it is much smaller than the hole in the carrier. and it looks like the gap between the two halves of the locker is way to big. The pins will not catch both sides.

Either I was sold the wrong locker or are there different 8.8 open carriers?

I have the box the locker came in but there is no part number on it anywhere.


Is there a way to take the numbers and letters engraved into each part of the locker to see what one I have for sure??

Im pissed right now cuz I wanted this on the road this weekend...

my money is on you having a 28 spline locker, as far as i know all 8.8 carriers are the same as far as gear ratios go. But I dont know about it being the same from 28 to 31 spline. Its also possible its not even a locker for an 8.8

Its a 31 spline for sure, already slide the outer gears over my axles.

After more searching I did find that Lockrite does make a locker for LSD factory diffs also. I have a busted one under the bench so I can see if it fits a LSD latter today.

Talked to Richmond tech today and got it figured out. Turns out it is a 31spline 8.8 Lockrite...but for a open diff with a 3/4 cross pin. The Explorer diffs use a 7/8 pin. So it looks like I just need to find the other open carrier.
