what axles
i am looking at swapping my front and rear axles. currently i have a D30LP front and 8.8" 28 spline. i am looking at swapping to full widths right now i am pretty set on a D60 front, but what should i do for the rear D60, D70, 10.25, or 14 bolt. gear wise i am looking at 4.88-5.13s and tires 37-39.5s. which would be the best bang for the buck, best clearance and best price.

10.25" is dirt cheap bullet proof and easy to find in junkyards everywhere. And if going in the ranger it has the speed sensor in it.

Gm 14 bolt will have the cheapest lockers and ease of setup, most have 30 spline 1.5'' axleshafts. It will probably be the most abundant in the yards too. Dana 70 is a great axle strenght wise, 35 spline 1.5'' axles. Ford 10.25 are very strong axles, they have 35 spline 1.5'' axles and will give you the most clearance. Stay away from the 60 rear.

the ranger in my sig. 2005 Ranger supercab, 4.0L, 5R55W, 1354E tcase. was reading the 10.25 would be my best bet as well. would it do ok spooled 90% offroad 10% on road heading to the offroad. for the 60 front same question. i assume its fine since i can leave the hubs open?

I run a "Lincoln" locked 10.25" in my bronco and it's been holing up fine for 5 years of hard abuse. With a light ranger I'd lock the rear and leave the front open and save for a selectable front locker. It makes it so much eaiser to drive everywhere if your hubs are locked in.

Kingpins are stronger, and will more easily allow highsteer if you want it. Look for a 91 or older f-350 and you can kill two birds with one stone. It should have a 10.25 in the rear. Welding the rear will be fine for your situation. I wouldn't weld the front unless you plan on full hydro. I have a spartan locker in my front 60, $300 to my door. It was stupid simple to install and has held up fine so far...

For the rear, my vote goes 10.25 all the way. Sure, it's more expensive than a 14 bolt to put lockers etc. in, but who cares, it can be welded for the cost of the rods. As has been said, it's got strong axle shafts, o ring axle seals, and the best ground clearance of any axle you're looking at. It actually has more clearance the the D60. I find 10.25s in good shape for $100 usually. The only weak link to the 10.25 is the pinion crush sleeve, which can be cheaply eliminated using the shims for a Ford 9".

Well shit, for that price, buy as many Ford Dana 60 fronts as you can. I will buy them. I don't know what I would do with them of course, but I would buy them.

just a quick update snagged me a D60 balljoint front for a huge $92
![]() going to leave the standard steering on it and skip high steer i don't have alot of lift nor do i plan to go higher. probably going to snag the 10.25 or 10.5 out of the rear of the truck i grabbed the front. for some reason the genious running the yard wants more for rear axle's than front ones. |

holy shit, less than a hundred for a 60 front,
oh, and i saw you mentioned a spool in a 10.25 rear, they don't make them for that axle, but welds are free

thanks for that tid-bit looked myself and looks like its getting the shit welded out of it. as for the front the upullit front axles are 76.99+core+tax came out to $92.xx out the door awesome deal. will have to get a new plastic piece for one of the hubs the manual locker was melted off (truck it got pulled from had a small fire) he has a couple trucks that may have D70's in them and they go for the same price as a sterling so i don't know which to go with. ($125ish for rear axles)

That's a screaming deal. Mine will eventually be free; I had to buy an $800 F-350 for the front axle, and then I bolted a free D50 TTB back under it. The truck will sell for more than that $800 I guarantee it. My buddy made off pretty good one time as well; he bought a non running F-350 for $600, sold the truck for $500, and then sold the axle for $1000. I would take advantage of your situation and visit that yard regularly to see if any more good axles show up. EDIT: Oh and I would still go 10.25 over a 70, unless you really want an actual locker. I would just weld the spiders on a 10.25 and be done with it. The 10.5 is actually the Superduty metric lug pattern axle. Other than that they're about the same.
